ADELAIDE GOLD CIRCULAR. [Newspaper Article] — Adelaide Morning Chronicle — 11 October 1852

ADELAIDE GOLD CIRCULAR. Tue diggings at Echanga continue te be carried on wi tb very fair success, though no monster.nug issued daring the week has been 195, making in all about 560. Many of those now working consist of parties on their way overland to Mount Alexander j who hare resolved on giving it a month's trial. Some of these, after working for a short time, have given np the idea of proceeding farther, being satis- fied that it is more profitable to dig so near home, even if they obtain only one half of what they might procure at Mount Alexander. The rains which fell in the early part of the week, especially in the hills, have as yet prevented the bottoms of the galleys from being properly tested by deep sinking, bat this may be soon ex- pected to be accomplished as the dry weather comes 1 on. The diggers generally appear satisfied with what they are doing, but it is very difficult to ascertain with certainty what their earnings actually are. One man has brought in as his week...

THE OPEN COLUMN. " Audi alteram paitem." THE CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION. [Newspaper Article] — Adelaide Morning Chronicle — 11 October 1852

THE OPEN COLUMN. " Audi alteram paitem." THE CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION. " Where justice calls, we praise, Where it commands, we strike." COLERIDGE. SIR,-The Board have assumed a power unknown to the Inquisition itself, for this tribunal gave the accused the melancholy satisfaction of vindicating his presumed errors, and maintaining his self-respect. The Board of Education condescend to no such semblance of justice ; yet, according to Mr Wiekes, their actions are " upright, straightforward, and equitable," and ac- cording to the Chairman of the Board, and member for East Adelaide, opposition from newspapers, to a course of action, contrary to the rights and abhorrent to the feelings of Englishmen, is set down as " balderdash." Mr Dutton did not always speak of news- papers so flippantly. There was a time when the eloquent member was peculiarly sensitive to the comments of the Press, and treated them with marked attention and respect Does he now "unto the ladder turn his back ?
