The Dog and the Bone. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times — 3 August 1899

The Dog and the Bone. Strange how many exciting things happen in Wellington. Wo havo hud an exciting sausage race, horse race, boy lost,.stieet lost (in mud). Yesterday wehad another exciting affair, which caused the large heart of a gigantic man to tremble in his manly bosom — tremble for his lost dinner. He had bought u, very nice, tenaer, ]mcy, delicate roast of mutton, to be served up with the usual trimmings at his dinner table. He hnng it on a string on his verqndah to mature. A large dog came along, sniffed the toothsome morsel from afar, stealthily approached, looked round to soe that no one was looking, made one gigantic leap, collared the great man's dinner, and scampered off to eat it at his leisure. Tho owner happened to spy. tbo thief, rushed frantically .to the door, and shouted at the top of his voice, ' Stop thief ! stop thief !' . But the dog ran away, just the same, and his speed was only accelerated by the shouts of tho frantio owner. We be lieve tbo dog ate the m...

Mr. C. Lauer's Butchery. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times — 3 August 1899

Sir. C. I^auer's Butchery. We had a look over Mr. Charley Lauer's butchery during this week, and fonnd all the arrangements of tho most up-to-date and natty nature. The go-ahead proprietor has had a large addition made at the. back of his premises, in which he has had fitted up an engine, brpnght by him from Molong. This engine is a model of incennif.o in mnnv ways, and is' put to manifold uses. ~ Mr. Lauer has brought his own intelligence to bear in the matter, with tho result that ho has effected many improvements and innova tions, all tending to the saving of labor. One bolt connects with a sausage machine, and the resultant edible is turned out ' while yon wait,' as it were. A pipe con nects with a large vat, conveying a stream of steam capable of boiling water in threo minutes. ThiB is where the pipe and such like is prepared by the process of boiling and steaming. In the Bhop itself are several fans suspended from the roofs, these are worked by means of a belt connected w'th t...

"CHEER UP," DO! [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times — 3 August 1899

'CIIEKR UP,' DO! By H. E. S. ' Gloomy shadows oft' will Hit ,xk'-r , If you've got tho grit and wit ,'.-. ','*} 'Just to laugh a little bit.' '?'*?;_ * * . *? * . * There are some sood dentists in the town of Wellington, but there is one fault I havo to find with not only the dentists of Well ington, but those in other places as well. It is the way they advertise, ' Teeth extracted, 2/6,' ' painless extraction, 5/-.' Now, if I were a dentist, I should feel inclined to state ' Teeth extracted, 10/6 ; painlesB extraction, 1/-,' because tho experiences a dentist has to undergo when extracting teeth without stopping the pain are worth extra fees. I heard of a dentist who received a black eye from a rough burly fellow who went to have some teeth out ; and on another occasion one of these gentlemen who benefit humanity got fairly entangled with a young lady when trying to pull a tooth out; even before ho properly started. She tugged at his arm, hung on and dragged him abonfc, crying out '...
