In the* Melbourne EVENING STANDARD of February 28th we find the following ai ticle referring to the matter, in whioh^^here is contained a very strong demand for the great connecting link of railway, and it will be surprising if before long this needful undertaking is not begun, in real earnest and finished without further dillydallying. THE ELECTION. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian and Northern Territory Government Gazette — 25 April 1890

THE ELECTION. I FRIDAY last saw the finishing touch put on our first election. Ou that day the votes of the electors of the Northern Territory were recorded Jat the various polling places, and as we write the total results are to hand with the exception of the Borroloola boxes. That the greatest interest was manifested in the contest may be taken for granted. In Palmers- ton, for instance, not one vote remained unrecorded when the ballot closed at 7 p.m., and although the total is not in itself exceedingly great, it is pleasing to find such unanswerable evidence of the popularity of the arrangement by which we were accorded the right to exercise the franchise independently of any other district. Each of the three candi- dates are known to us, or tne most of us, personally. All three had spent many years in the Territory in different phases of " business," and each one had his particular partisans to back him up and further his prospects. No foreign element was introduced, and the fi...
