SPORTING NOiES. THE MELBOURNE CUP. (BY NAnCIBSE.) ' Tenmpl s Fugit ! Perhaps the truth fulness of this is brought nmre specially and- forcibly under the notice of turf scribes than the majority oijother see tions of the community. It seems but yesterday that I was discussing the me rits of Waxy, Wheatear, Wellington and others which were thought to have the.last Melbourne Cup between them, and then to acknowledge that Zulu and The Czar had euchred me; uid now I am reminded that another of these great sensationar handicap events i ; rapidly approaching, the first move of which will be made next Monday, when the nominations for the Melbourne Cup of 1882 will be received. I am rot going to speculate as to how many animals will throw down the gauntlet, but we may be sure that there will be a great number, many having alreadpl been backed straight out and in doubles. The sporting world is all agog mw withl excitement, and as the nominations for many other great events will be received on...

MINING AT OMEO. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 3 June 1882

MtINILNG AT OIIEO. (Br VIATon.) Having, during the past week, paid.;a flying visit to this township, I was liatu rally interested in ascertaining all: I could about it and its prospects. Omoo is beautifully situated in a valley sur rounded by hills, some of which might well be called mountains. It possesses one bank, a branch of the Colonial, opened four years ago, three public houses or hotels, and several stores, and each and all appear to do a thriving trade. But I do not wish to dwell on these. I would rather direct attention to it as a promising goldfield. In its immediate vicinity are several creeks which have been worked by alluvial miners for many years past, and which have yielded -good returns. At the present time there are a number of Celestials working on the Livinmstone Creek, wilichi runs through the town ship, and as a rule they are all earning good wages, though the best ground was supposed to be worked out some years ago. At Swift's Creek, some 17 miles from here, a...

THE LOSS OF TIHE RETIYr JAaSE. Captain Patrick, the master and part owner of the Pretty Jane, and his crew, twelve hands in all, arrived in Melbourne on Friday night by the last train from Sale. The following is a narrative of the loss of the vessel, as published in the Ale: We left Melbourne on the 4th of last month, and all went well until the fol lowing morning, when a gale from the north-west set in. We arrived off the Lakes Entrance and anchored about midnight, the weather then heing some what calmer. Towards morning the gale sprang up again, and increased in violence. Heavy seas broke over the vessel, and an attempt was made to cross the bar, but the wind, which was blowing off the land, was too powerful, and the vessel was driven out to sea.
