In addition to the 48 players engaged in the match, there were other rinks going at the same time, ftpd there were not far short of 60 players ' enjoying this favorite pastime on the greens during the afternoon. Suburban and General. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 11 April 1885

Suburban and General. The telegrams, recently received from Europe give a very mixed account of the doings of Russia and tho Afghans. The whole affair seems, a mystery, and although the first impression is that to attack the Afghans is to attack England there is still a probability of the Russian Bear withdrawing from a contest. . .' An advertisement elsewhere announces that Mr. Angelo Smith will give a lecture on 'English and Irish orators,' in St. Joseph's ; .schoolroom, on Thursday next, in connection with St. Joseph's Literary aud Debating Society. ?- - A very disreputable- affair occurred at a cricket match which was played in Connellys paddock, Lane Cove on Good Friday, resulting in a fight between two of the players and sub sequent police interference. A man named Charles Joseph Thomas was knocked down and killed by a train at the Burwood Railway Station on Saturday last. A ?. person ? bathing at Warnambool r on . CRICKET. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 11 April 1885

CRICKET. A very interesting match was played on Good Friday between the local clubs, Albion and Waratah. The contest took place on the Waratah's wicket, Pigeon Ground Reserve, and was witnessed - by about four hundred spectators. A good deal of 'time was wasted, in ppnsequcnce of several players from both sides being absent, but at 12 o'clock, tlie captains came to terms about substitutes and a start was made, The WaratahB were the first to bat and remained in possession of tho wickets until the score bad reached 118- runs — W. Current Items. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 11 April 1885

Current items. The monthly meeting of the Balmain Fire Brigade was held on Tuesday night, Captain Dillon in the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting having been confirmed, - a committee was appointed to revise the rules. A. discussion then took place on the ques tion of obtaining new uniforms for the members 'of the brigade by means of public subscription, and it was decided to write to the Superintendent for per mission to do so. Mr. Ambrose Smith was appointed an auditor vice Mr. F. Cadogan, resigned, and after some for mal business had been disposed of the meeting adjourned. It is either the result of shortness of funds, or the good example set them by the Mayor, that has caused our civic fathers to conduct the business of the Balmain Council in such a speedy man ner. On Tuesday last it only took about an hour arid a half to complete the business of the meeting. It was quite a contrast to the recent four-hour meet ings. ; We are glad to see that some further action is about...

Gossiping Conner. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 11 April 1885

Gossiping Co ner. The mimio war is over, and our oitizen soldiers have gone back to their happy, peaceful homes covered with the glories gained on EaRter Monday and following' days, and no doubt, very sensibly, hoping that their battles may always be as harmless. I am very fond of seeing military manoeuvres, and gladly availed my self of the holiday to visit Middle Head. The ' picture was a grand one. It awoke vAmmi'a/tna nf mvr cnVinrtl dn.va 1 HflAll to read all about the brave deeds of Nelson, Gooliran, 'Wellington and others. 'When I saw the Wolverine blazing forth her broad sides and enveloping hersolf in smoko, I could not wonder at Nelson failing to see his Admiral's recall signal even from his blind eye. Again looking round me I could not help admiring the many prepar ations that havo been made to give an enemy a hot reception, and naturally cal culated the' impossibility of the HuBsinns getting past our guns and torpedoes, when my spirits were damped by the news that our to...

MISCELLANEOUS. \V ith pardonable pride a lady dis played a very ancient piece of house linen to her servant, saying-, as she -held it up for inspection. ' Look, Bridget, this table cloth, has been in our family for over 200 years. Bridget eyed the article in question carefully, and then, stepping close to her mistress, remarked in a most confidential tone, ' Shure never mind Mrs. Arthur dear, it you just nape quiet about it and don't let on to anybody who wonld know but what it was bought bran' now out of the shop. 'James,' said a well-known city mer chant to his shopman as bo entered his store, 'you've got an awful smell of whisky about you this morning.' ' Weil sir,' replied James, ' if the smell of it only does you as much good as the taste did me, you're welcome to it.' James is now looking after another billet. Correspondence. EARTH CLOSETS OR CESSPITS. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 11 April 1885

Correspondence. EARTH CLOSETS OR CESSPITS. TO THE EDITOB. Sir, — In your issue of the 1th instant, I find a leader upon the utility or otherwise .of the earth oloset system over the cesspit. There cannot be two opinions regarding the advantage of the earth system, for it has been most certainly demonstrated by the scientists of the present age, and when we find gentle men of the highest authority making experi- , ment oa the above subjo it, and advocating the efficacy of the earth system, I am of opinion there should not be any delay 011 the part of all the boroughs in making it compulsory to adopt the earth closets. I would even go so far as to compel all cesspits to be filled in. All new ideas, until experience: is bought too dearly, are pooh poohed. It is a fact, and can be proved that the excrement undergoes a chemical change when it comes in contact with porous clay, owing no doubt to the presence of oxide of iron, which is the most efficacious deodorizer the earth contains; I ...
