Traveller. THE SOUTHERN POLE. [Newspaper Article] — Canowindra Star and Woodstock Recorder — 27 June 1902

traveller. THE SOUTHERN POLE. 307|PEBHAPS there is no other portion 5|(pJ! of the world of which bo little iB jiJcJ? known or which presents so for bidding an aspect to the explorer as that lying south of the antarctic circle. The attention of the public, somewhat lethargic on this point, has been raised to a high degree of interest by the two ex peditions now on their way to the southern ocean. The only one previously visiting those waters, which could be regarded as pro perly equipped, was that of Sir James Clark Boss, in 1810-13. This was of a purely scientific character, chiefly for the purpose of locating the south magnetic pole. While exploring Victoria Land, then supposed to be an antarctic continent, the volcanoes, Mount Erebus and Mount Terror, were discovered and named from the ships of the expedition. The former iB 12,400 ft. high, and, at that time, was emitting flame and smoke. Mount Terror is 10,900 ft. high. No opening conld be found in the ice barrier, from 150 to 20...

r-inbufV F and S. Association A uieetiug Ireld on Saturday last for ?tins purpose of selecting suitable caudi -lates from those nominated for seats on * the Moiling Kabbit Board to receive the j 6:ipport of this branch of the Farmers I r.nd Settlers Association, did not on the ?whole turn out as well as w:is expected, tlie cause being the unavoidable absence of ssreral of the most prominent mem nomination papers should have proved informal, especially as a least two of those three would have received the sup of the Cranbury settlers. Mr. P.. E. Moore, the nominee of the body is com i idered to stand an excellent chance of . Election, as he is a man who thoroujrlj.lv understands the district and has hnd an extensive experience in dealing ?with rab bits, and ho will legitimately represent tho small holders, which ?will provo one of the very greatest boons in the near 'future; he also* is a man who will see that the money of the tax payers is not use uselessly squandered.

Rabbit Beard Candidates. [Newspaper Article] — Canowindra Star and Woodstock Recorder — 27 June 1902

Rabbit Beard Candidates. In this Issue Mr. 1?. E. Moor.\ of ' Frisbv,' Cudnl nnnouiiccs his candida ture for a seat on the Slolong Itibbi* Board to be elected on July olh nest, a candidature which should be most popu lar with the local farmers, as though the £rent]ein-in is not exactly a local resident lie must be more in touch with the re quiirenrent»s of the district in commotion with the administration of the Rabbit Act than almost any other candidate no minated. Mr. Sfoore has a reputation . for integrity which is beyond dispute and is the nominee of the Cranbury Farmers nnd Settlers Association, which is a body of men who may be trusted implicitly to look well fo the welfare of the district in 1 heir choice of, a candidate. Therefore farmers in this district when voting should make no mistake about leaving Iiisname along with three others on their 'ballot papers. 'Another gentleman . INSECT PESTS. [Newspaper Article] — Canowindra Star and Woodstock Recorder — 27 June 1902

INSECT PESTS. We have from time to time in these papers strongly advooated the use of the lime and sulphur wash for insect peBts. This material can be used to great ad vantage over a large area in orchards infested with San Jose Scale, and may be successfully used on all kinds of fruit trees. In all cases the material may be applied in the spring of the year, and is considered by some people to bo far more effective in checking the scale disease than any other material used. Also it is very inexpensive. The solution after it is made should be applied warm, with an ordinary spray pump such as is used for Bordeaux mixtnre. The mixture may appear a little difficult to prepare at first, but when the proper equipment is secured and the necessary materials provided, it is no more difficult to make than kerosene emulsion washes. The secret of the suc cess largely depends upon the menaer in which the material is made and the thoroughness with which it is applied to the trees. To those desir...
