The Pioneer. SATURDAY, APRIL 4, 1896, THE ELECTIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 4 April 1896

—»■——— hmcer. SATURDAY, APRIL 4, 1896, THE ELECTIONS. The parliamentary elections being now fixed for the 2(5 th in stant, the electoral campaign will begin in earnest u«it week. There will probably be five or six candidates for this district, and our late member, the Hon, F. W. Holder, Colonial Treasurer, will be one. His services to his constituents during the last six years most cer tainly entitle him to their confidence. Others however there are in the field who will doubtless make fulsome pro mises, but Mr. Holder being a member of the Government has power and in fluence, they have not, and niany of Renmark's requirements can be granted without legislative sanction. If these can be guaranteed before the election, or put in a fair way, so as to give reasonable expectations of their being obtained, Mh Holder can reckon on the greater majority of Renmark votes, if not the whole. First and foremost must comes the question of adequate advances to the Renmark Irrigation Trust. If no ...

TO PROTECT POSTS FROM WHITE ANTS. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 10 April 1896

P1I0TECT POSTS FROM WHITE AaTS. At a branch Bureau meeting at Yorktown, Mr. J. Kotli read a pap-r, of which the following is the sub stance:—He had made a study of the habits of white ants (termites), and had found that they never attacked posts set up in salt swamp.-*. He, therefore, adopted the practise of put ting a shovelful of salt in each hole when filled to within six inches of the surface, and then filling up with soil. When rain falls it dissolves the salt, which impregnates the. soil around the I posts, and the termites, or white ants, refrain from attacking posts so treated. Telegraph-posts and all timber could be protected in a similar manner. He strongly recommended farmers who had salt lakes on their holdings to soak their posts in the lake for twelve months before using them, when the extra salting in the past-holes would net be necessary. He had been in - formed that the posts for a stockyard, made of red gum had been dressed with tar, but the white ants soon at tack...

VEGETABLE PEPSINE. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 10 April 1896

VEGETABLE PEPSINE. . At the Mount Remarkable branch of the Agricultural Bureau Mr. Law son read an interesting paper on "Vegetable pepsine," of which the following is a short abstract"Vege table pepsine is the name given to the juice of the unripe fruit of the Papaw (Carica papaya), a plant widely dis tributed throughout the tropics. It is a handsome tree, growing to a height of 16 to 20 feet, absorbing a tremen dous quantity of moisture from the soil. The useful properties of this plant have for ages been utilised by natives of the various countries where it grows, and travellers give numerous instances of its use, more especially in the way of utilising the solvent pro perties of the juice for the purpose of making tough meat tender. He gave numerous instances of this. When fed to old hogs and fowls the meat be comes quite tender. If tough meat is wrapped in the leaves or placed in the juice of the plant for a short time it soon becomes tender. The attention of medical men was thu...

JAPANESE WINEBERRY. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 10 April 1896

JAPANESE WINEBERRY. The Japanese Wineberry (Rubus pboenicolasius) is noticed in a pappr i read by Mr. Geo. Bunyard, F.R.H.S., on " Nf-w Fruits of Recpnt Introduc tion." " It is a useful fruit for tarts, etc. ; and being also a handsome climbing and trailing plant, with a pretty "weeping habit and red stems, I think it has a future before it." The plant has received a firet-class certifi cate from the judge of the Royal Horticultural Society of England, not merely an award of merit. Further on Mr. Bunyard says, as regards ail new fruits, that, tbey must be first class, as in almost every department there are already too, many varieties. This plant grows and bears well in Mi'dura, Mr. B. W. Burton ry of Irv.uipie Valley, having imported the seeds and raised them successfully.
