Tho Eastern Downs Horticultural and Agricultural Association. ANNUAL 8nOW. THE annual show in connection with the Eastern Downs Horticultural and Agricul tural Associat ion was held in the grounds of the Society on Wednesday, when tho result was an unqualified success in more than one respect. In tho first place the weather WHB fine, so far as the earlier part of the day was concerned, for the afternoon was far spent before the rain commenced to come down with a somewhat spiteful plash, which lasted for nearly two hours without intermission. But the Bupport of the general public hud already been secured ; nothing could liave happened more opportune, iuasmuch as it sat everybody smiling, for after a most enjoyable day, thatdow from Heaven, so much needed of late, came with gratifying effect. Whilst farmers were exchanging compliments, somewhat ill-humourdly over tho unexpected outccmo of their legitimate emulation, the more beneficent effects of healthy showers suddenly gladdened the...

The Hon. Member for Darling Downs. (From the Courier.) [Newspaper Article] — Warwick Argus — 31 January 1880

The Hon. Member for Darling Downs. (Prom the Courier.) MB. KATES, M.L.A. for tho Darling Downs, met hifl constituents on Saturday evening last at the tomiBhip of Fratton. The attendance was large, and Mr. Kates was well received. Mr. J. Keleher occupied the chair. After a brief review of tbe position of patties when Parliament was called together, Mr. Kates explained that he took a seat on the present Opposition side of the House, and had worked all through the session with the Opposition, because he found the squatting party united in a Bolid body and supporting the liovcrainent. He expected from tho outset of such a combination that' the legislation would not be benefical to tbe farming classes with whom he was associated. Events had proved that tbe views entertained on the Libera) side of tho House were but too well grounded. What he could not but stigmatise as the improper connection of mem bers of the Government with the Queensland Bank transactions came to light at an early pa...

Mr. Kates at Darkey Flat. [Newspaper Article] — Warwick Argus — 3 February 1880

Mr. Kates at Darkey Flat. ME. KATES in rendering an account of his stewardship before a section of his constituents at Darkey Plat re cently met with a deservedly gratify ing reception. As Bcuior member for tlic Darling Downs, Mr. KATES may be complimented, in so promptly fol lowing tho example of Mr. M'LEAN, at Beenleigh. We read his speech 'with "as "much pleasure as the people of Darkey Flat must have experienced in listening to it. There was no beating about the bush, no political charlatan ism, but it had a genuine and consis tent ring throught. It was uot only a confirmation of the pledges given ,by Mr. KATES at tho time of bis candida ture for tho Downs, but embraced an. unsparing criticism of the work of the present Ministry. From hiB own view tof tho question Mr. KAJteb' speech may bo accoptod as a decided succcss.
