AUSTRAUArc \ BU3HS3ANGING. THE ZEJ^IRyZLfSr ZDA.YS. By CHARLES WHITE. Ciiaitek V.— Continued. ' One of tlic convicts naiucilJnnicB Hen Id questioned his ability, when Day dared liiin to stand at a cer tain distance before him while ho threw a long strip . of Kauri pine, much like u spuar,.and about lift, in length and an inch in thickness, llculd did stand and Day threw the piece of. wood, there being a space of about 60ft. between the two men. The missile, propelled with great force and precision, .struck lieu Id in the face just be low the eye and inflicted a terrible wound. The convicts managed to hide the occurrence from the authorities until Heald's death made it impossible. An inquest was then held, but as it was sworn that all Day; did was done in 'sport,' and that Ileald contributed to his own death by engaging in that 'sport,' very little was made of the matter. Heald's removal from the prison yard and cells made one convict less — that -was all. Before the full term of his...

FROM THE BULLETIN. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 17 January 1906

FROM THE BULLETIN. A Flank Movement.— He : 'I can't face your father to ask him for your hand ; I'm too frigh tened.' She : 'You needn't be frightened in facing him ; the great danger is when you turn your back, dear.' * * * A Mr. James Miller, who has re turned from u-visit to Canada, re ports in 'Daily Telegraph' : — If our land in Australia was as acces sible as land is in Canada, we should soon get immigrants here. We liavo great pastoral estates absorbing splen did land. In Canada there is nothing of the kind. There Mr. Miller strikes one half of the secret. The other half is that Canada has a tariff which finds abundance of work for its town population. A country which has land to offer to the agri culturist and a steady job to offer to the artisan will always get im migrants. When they really mean to sup press betting in England, they have a fairly sudden way of doing it. 'Loyd's Weekly,' of Nov. 25, reports that 'for using a small shop in Red Cross-street, Borough, Jas. Women and Pensions. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 17 January 1906

Women and Pensions. The cvidonce given before the Fed eral Commission by a magistrate who hns' assisted in the admiuis tiation of the old-nge pensions fund in this Stato. more than con lirnis' the complaints that have been made of aouses of the system. It shows that the money which' is contributed by the taxpayers is being used, perhaps to a greater extent than was supposed, to give the community's help to those who arc in no need of it. While that indicates imposition on tho. public which ought to be stopped as a mere matter of justice, it also sug gests how much of the money spcnl in pensions is wasted and diverted from the good purposes it might serve under sounder and more humane administration. It is clear that , the same amount would suffice to relieve' distress over a much wider area than can be covered, while a substantial pro portion of it is presented to persons comparatively well-off. It might be possible, for example, - to reduce tho pension age and thus make a start tow...

The Council and Street Watering. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 17 January 1906

The Council and Street Watering. Mr. Alderman Bland rendered the municipality a service when he brought the matter of securing some ?sort of a water service for watering .the streets before the Council. Ho suggested a water cart, but when it was shown that one or even two carts would be unequal to the work, and the expense would be relatively heavy, Mr. Bland very properly .withdrew his proposal and secured the appointment of four aldermen to inquire into, and report upon the best way of carrying out the object he had in view. 'In the absence of an adequate town water supply with mains laid throughout the municipality it would be impos sible to ' enforce a general water rate, so that anything the Council might do must obviously be of a patchy or piecemeal character. Perhaps Mr. Blaud's action will lead to a consideration of the larger question of a complete water service for the municipality. The present cry comes principally from the shopkeepers 'whose goods suffer from the dust-st...
