Manipulation Milking. A. Da no, Dr. J. Homeland, has givcu his name to a .method of man ipulation milking which gets out all the milk without waste. Tt is pre sumed that the s3rstein is far in ad vance of the stripping method. The method of milking which -Dr. Hegeland jierfectcd, and which bears his name, consists iu following up or.iinary ra; id milking by certain manipulations of the udder which will bring down the residual milk in the udder after a full flow of milk has ceased. The aim of the manipu lations is, in general, to initiate a calf's way of getting milk. ' The characteristic part of the method consists of three different manipula tions after the udder has been emptied by the ordinary method of rapid milking with the dry whole hand. Friendly Societies' Sports. The fifth annual' sports gathering in connection with tlie united bodies of the ! Oddfellows and Hibernian Friendly So cieties was held .in Mr. E. . Windeyer's paddock on Monday last under most favourable weather conditions, and, al though not quite so well patronised as on previous occasions, the sports were a success financially, for which the credit is due to the committee who had charge of the arrangements. All the events ou the programme went off as smoothly as could be, aud no hitch of any kind oc: curred to cause delay. The programme was opened with the youths' race at about ii. 30, after which luncheon was partaken of. The crowd then began to turn up in large numbers, and were provided with some fine sport and many exciting' finishes.
