STRANGER THAN FICTION. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Observer and Normanby Advertiser — 9 July 1914

STRANCER THAN. FICTION. (BY PETER,) A one time Kentbruck domine, with a taste for horse flesh, once remarked that, to gallop down tie long gullies and to ride over the highest hills on a good horse was worth having lived for, if at the end of the ride you broke your neck in a rabbit burrow. There are not many of us who have not ex perienced a feeling of this sort at some time in their lives. unless they are hopeless wowsers. The impulse is pro bably due tb lingering dregs in our blond inhe, ited from ancestors who had to hunt for ia living, and who in their turn were hunted for their lives. A ride over Mt. Richmond, to com pony of the genial owner of the hill, was a few days ago the fortune of the. writer. During our search for cattle we started a dozen or more old man kangaroos and followed them over the hills to see that che dogs did them no injury, until a barb wire fence damped our ardour. We viewed the ruins of nany abandoned homes, "where on-se a garrden smiled, and stil where...

Iti' not to be wondered at: the public look askance at any proposi. tlon when the person is apparently, a financial loser without direct or indirect gain. Fraudulent schemes have often been successful, and in these days sceptics want better proof than the waid of Marquis.
