The Government recelved a telegram fromt Port Darwin today, stating that William Davis, a water policeman, had been seized by an alligator while bathing, and eaten in sight of several men. Davis arrived by the Condor, and has a family at St. Kilda.

ATTEMPT OF A FATHER TO SHOOT   HIS SON. 'The Walcha correspondent of the Armidale Express sends the report of a case which reveals a shocking state of affairs:- At the police office on Monday, 14th October, be- fore Mr D. C. Fenwick, J.P., George Mar- tin, senior, was charged with shooting at his son, George Martin, junior, with intent to do him grevious bodily harm. On the appli- cation of the senior constable, the case was remanded till Thursday, the 17th inst. On that day the prisoner was again brought up. George Martin, jun, deposed that on Satur- day evening he called on Mrs Stockbridge with a couple of parcels, when he saw his father sitting inside by the fire, and he ap- peared to witness to be in a state of drink. He gave the parcels to Mrs Stockbridge, and she asked him to stay and have some tea. He told her it was late (sundown), bade her good-night, and started away to go home. His father come out, called him, and asked him was he not going to speak to him. W...

WANGARATTA POLICE COURT. Thursday, Noveniber 21. (Before Dr Miller J.P., the Mayor, and A Tone, 'Esq.) Catherine Kelly, alias Brand, resmnad for 48 hour. .. .... Daniel Neil was charged 'withl cutling and steallng growing trees from a park. " William Murdoch deposed that he owned properly called ourdech's Park, on the Oxley Road. He missed 17 growing trees therefrom Ia September last,. $e valued them at £20O. He had not authorised anyone to cut or remove them. The property is fenced with a three rail fence. Edward Stearm deposed he knew ,lurdooh'e Park. loe knew the prisoner. On August the 25th, he saw the prisoner ut down a tree in Mlurdoch'e paddock and cut it up. It was about 4 in the afternoon. . By the prieoner-io wse stire it was the pri. soner that cut down the tree on the 25th of Augus'. . .THI CARL, OUTRAGES. Some very serious charges ngainst Mel-. bourno men were brought forward at the Sydney water police court on the 9th inst., when the case against Charles Dordep, the mate of the Carl, for murdering a man on the high sees was heard. Evidence was given by George Heath; a seaman 'on board the Carl, implicating the prisoner, who was committed for trial, bail being refused. The statements of Heath also reflected upon MIessrse Bount and Scott, of Melboirne. Much of the evidence given by" Heath was only a repetition of that given on former trials, when the manner in which the natives had been kidnapped, shot, and thrown dver board was stated in full. After'recapitulat ing this, Heath gave the following evidence : -" Prisoner had charge of one boat, and Mr Mount of another.
