Artesian Wells. We think the importance of the snbj»ct fully justifi s,our devoting so much apace to the following extract from a very able paper read bv Mr. F. E. H. W. Ericfaauff. M.P.. before tbe Adelaide Philosophical Society last week:— Referring now specially to artesian well*, I will ' mention the following facts, many of which I presume are new to you, and there fore interesting — experienfia doeet :— Previous to the boring of artesian wells in. 1846 Venice was dependent for its water supply on rain water, and on what was conveyed by boats from the Brenta. The first well gave water at the rate of nearly 60,000 gallons a day, acd others have since proved .similarly successful. At Burnbeck, near Hamburg, are fonrartesiau wells, aunk at a total cost of £250, to depths varying from 94 to 178 feet, and from 2' to 4' wide. The quantity of water which rises from 15' to 30' above tbe surface is from 1 to ki II litres (i to 2J gallons) per fec3nd,and the .four together give daily 1,7...

Dawson, EHire, J P'sJ Joseph Snore, charged with language calcu lated to provoke a breach of the peace the previous day. Prisoner was defended bj Mr. Packard, and Dleaded not aufltv. ' Constable James deposed that the prisoner and F. Sohul'z, the driver of the cab, were ' larking,' and Shore knocked off Schul'z'a hat. SchuHz threatened to give him in charge when prisoner said he (the Constable) was not the man to do it and used insulting language. Tfcen arrested him in the Queen's name. Cross-examined by Mr. Packard : — Mr. Newman, commercial t.-aveller was also in the ?cab, but he did not gay that if he (Newman) appeared in court it would be hot for the con* stable.
