Leila and Her Lover. Published by Arrangement with Ward, Lock and Co. Ltd., London and Melb. (All Rights Reserved.) IV. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 20 May 1914

Leila and Her Lover. By MAX PEMBERTON. Published by Arrangement with Ward, Lock and Co. Ltd., London and Melb. (All Rights Reserved.) IV. It was half-past three when he .ar rived a<. the prison—oddly enough the first time lie had entered one in all his life. All the great traditions of the house of Donald had to do with the activities of manhood, war, the chase; the camps and courts of kings. He had known Aberfeldy Gastle for-a home since he had been a little lad; had found his childish kingdom on the wild moorland or by the rugged sea-; shore. He knew little of cities, less of the sordid phases of twentieth cen tury life. London had been for him a vast theatre wherein he had seen the show from the boxes rather than from the stalls—while of the pit he had tout the vaguest impressions. To such a man a prison stood at the nadir of life's purpose. He remember ed once seeing a poor woman in Aber feldy who had returned from Edin burgh gaol, and he recalled the fur tive home-co...

The Getting Power of Rams. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 20 May 1914

The Getting Power of Rams. V A total of 212 lambs has stood for some time as the Australian record tor the result of one sea soil's service of one ram, but this was beaten last season in South Australia 011 the occasion of 407 Iambs having been marked to a son of Donald Dinnie, who was bred by the Canowic stud, and therefrom for 550 guineas. The. The previous best reccrd in th<» same locality for one season was 261 lambs sired by the Haddon Rig ram Dandie Dinmont. It is further stated that, given an un limited number of ewes, and con fined to a single service, separated and fed over night, it is difficult to estimate what a vigorous and active ram can accomplish during six to eight week's service. Not infrequently breeders are limited by the number of ewes that they have to proportion to the service of each rani, and conse quently few rams have the oppor tunity of proving their full capa city at Jamb producion under practical supervision during the "season's service. A Trip to King Island. (Bj J.M.P.) (Contiuned) Wo wore visited in our tribulation and invited to a neighboring home stead, which wo reached by climbing 100 feet, Tho view was lovely and tho wind .blew with vigo:*, howling through tho lofty gnras. The crash ing of somo mighty forest monarch was of frequent occurrence, indicating that there was a fire of some dimen sions in the forest. Our home ■ jour ney was notable for the abundance of smoko that hung around and bore down on us liko a pall. We were assured that there were lots of fish about Currio, so wo tried oar luck one day. A single cray fell to our lot, one octopus and one rock fish. Wo wero pestered by a shark, about 9 feet long, which persistently chased round after ouo cray fish bait, and although one of tho party beat him with a rod, ho came again as wo left.
