THE WEAKNESS OF PUBLIC OPINIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 11 January 1866

THIE WEAKNESS OF PUBLIC OPINTION. [mono? THE SETURIDiT EVIEW.] Among the numerous grounds fornational complacency which the newspapers discover for us, and which every morning at break &Ast we roll as savoury morsels under the tongue, none is more conspicuous or more delightful than the irresistible might of pub lic opinion in this favoured land. It is very pleasant to fitd that, in spite of wars and cottoni amines, our exports and imports ra ige higher than ever they did. We feel a proud satisfhction in learning that, in spite of the reduction of ever so many taxes and the abolition of ever so many others, the revenue is even n:ore copious than usual. And when we read the solemn admonitions and warn ings dealt forth to wieked continental pow ers, that if they do not leave the eP·- or their ways they will ,,.?-ny forfeit the rmlt- -,cr uungland, lives there a man with soul so d&adas not to feel elated with himselfand his native land? But none of these ftings move us ...

ENGLISH UNDEFILED. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 11 January 1866

ENGLISH UNDEFILED. [FnoM "FUN."] I bend and say with earnest glance (Her fallen hair my whiskerstickles), "Ah, were my life but one long dance With you!" She answers loudly, Pickles!" Upon the balcony we lean I sigh, "Carnia r how I suffer; Be thou my Jul;et! Be my quen! " She only says, "Shut up, you duffer!" In Rotton row she takes delight, I lift the darling to her saddle, And whisper, "Sweet, von're fairv lght!" Says she, "0 bother lets skedaddle!" We go to see the new burlesque, She's a decided taste f5r punning; And laughing at a dance grotesque, Her lips of coral murmur, "Sthnining We've been to where the Friecasang, But she considers Norma folly And very much prefers "Slap Bang I" Which she declares is, "Awful jolly." I seek the garden's shadiest place, She lightly o'er the lawn comes trippin,' And offerina a dainty case Says, "Will you have a weed, my pippin ?" It seems the strangest thing to me, She's had a famous education; Her father is a sage M.P., And helps to rule the...

VALUE OF LOCAL JOURNALS. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 11 January 1866

VALUE OF LOCAL JOURNTALS. -0 TUE following sensible and truthful article is from the Creawick Advertiser:-"To up country papers, whosa name is legion, the support accorded is small, the eirculation is necessarily limited; and though it is unjust to compare one of these with metropolitan 1papers, yet consideration in this matter. is rarely ever shewn. Jones patronises the lccal paper, it is true, but he calls it the L ag." 'Is there anything in the 'Rag' this morning?" Or, 'as usuitl there is no thing in the 'Rag' worth looking at,' are es pre:ssions as familiar in Jones's mouth as houschold words. Jone :also takes in the Australasini, or Weekly Age, and "there" JonesI says with emphasis, "you have some thing for your money!" Jones, in most matters, is a reasonable creature, HIe con duets his business systematically and ener getically, betrays no symptoms of lunacy in private life, and is generally considered a steady-going, practical man. But on this point, at least, Jones' usual go...

THE LAST RUMOURED JOB AT THE HORSE GUARDS. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 11 January 1866

TIHE LAST RUM3OURED JOB AT THE HORSE GUARDS. "You are laughing at my beard,'.' says the intending purchaser of. a horse when the broker on the Stamboul bazaar asks 10 times the animal's worth; and when a Pacha or other dignatory nominates his pipe-bearer, or the brother of his favourite wife, to a post for which lie is notoriously unfit, the placid Orientals-who, if the. were Englishmen, would vent their indignation by "writing to the papers"-express their disgust at the piece of nepotism by saying that the great man is "laughing at the Sultan's beard." . Unless our usually wMll-informed contempo rary the Arry and Naivy Gtizette has been which is by no means probable-the victim of a hoax, His Royal Highness has just made a nomination which can dlly be accounted for on the hypothesis that he was trying to '-'* ,'xent' John Bull would stand " laugh ing at lu.ui ý J" To rake up all the de tails of the Bentinek-T3ib,,rts:on scandal, would, so long after the terminatiu tr the affair, p1r...
