COUNTRY NEWS. FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. ISISFORD, March 15. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 24 March 1880

COUNTRY NEWS. FBOH OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT. ISESFO&D, March 15. A FEW evenings ago, in a certain house in Isieford, a meeting was held, in which several very respectable persons expressed their views, but who <!o not wish to see their names in print; therefore your humble reporter is debarred from sending you their speeches. But the few working men that were there do not object to me sending you their lost year's travelling experience. Throughout the meeting great indignation was expressed against the law allowing the poor unfortunate vegetarian Kanaka to come into the interior of Queensland. It will be easily seen by the experience of the working class that the supply of white labor in the interior exceeds the demand by far. The first resolution passed at the meeting was proposed by Mr. Weston, and seconded by Mr. Qillard: " That this meeting con demns the Government for having withdrawn the restrictions forbidding Kanakas to be employed in the interior of Queensla...

THE KANAKA QUESTION. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 31 March 1880

THE KANAKA QUESTION. I TO THE EDITOB. SIB,-The question of the re-introduction of Kanaka labor into the interior of Queens land has occupied a deal of space in the columns of vaqouB journals of late, more par ticularly those published in Central Queens land, and I notice in the majority of in stances a deal of vituperation lias been cast upon the poor Polynesian. Why is this? I cannot sec that the Islanders arc to blame for coming to the colony. A recruiting vessel visits the Islands, the advantages of the colony of Queensland as a field ofiabor aro^ pointed in the most vivid colon to the Islanders, a wage is offered them, which undoubtedly a large sura to tliosCwho have hitherto possessed so little; theircxpMWM arc paid, and they willingly cmbalk tor the "land of promise." At the end at their term, generally three years, they retain to their native land-having in the majority of cases spent their hard-earned wages in use less firearms and shoddy clothing. They arc pointed out as sl...

The Western Champion. Vita sine literis mors est. BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 31 March 1880

ft ttofcuN Vita tine Merit mort eft. BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31. IT is not long since the failure of tlic Glasgow Bank and the trial of its manager and directors was the theme of indignant conversation all over the world. The extreme indulgence shown towards the offenders was felt to be a miserable burlesque of justicc, and the newspaper press of England did notneg lect to severely criticise the action of the judges. Something like a repetition of the same affair on a smaller scale has occurred in Victoria. The manager and directors of the Provincial and Suburban Bank have been placed upon trial charged with conspiring to defraud. After a long and searching examination all the accused have been found guilty of the crime, and it has been conclusively proved that they have deceived and defrauded the shareholders of the Bank. The counts upon which they were arraigned may thus be summarised : 1st. Buying the bank shares with the bank money. 2nd. Publishing false I reports and balance...
