ONE of our Melbourne contemporaries, the Age, published, on Monday last, n letter from Beechworth, narrating a variety of circumstances connected with the engagement in Melbourne of four young females for service in a hotel on the Woolshed, their arrival here, their discovery of the character of the house to which they were con signed, their refusal tojfulfil their agree ment by entering into service in what they considered a disreputable house, ami stigmatizing the whole as a horrible practice which ought at once to he put down by the strong arm of the law. Ill a leader devoted to the subject of this letter, the Age calls down public indignation upon the system, and upon those who are engaged in it, suggesting as a remedy that all marts or offices for the hire of servants should be registered by the police, and compelled to keep lists of all the transactions taking place an...
