Correspondence. [We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents.] THE COMING ELECTION. (To the Editor of the Standard.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 20 July 1878

t;nrreopuudelre. -4-~- [le do not hold ourseelve responsible for the opinions expressed by our eorrespondents.l. TIIE COMING ELECTION. (To the Editor of the Sltandard.) B?n,-As the shire election is approaching, and as candidates are already beginning to look us up, which they are punctual to do at these times (though at n,) other), I think a few words at this tim u might be productive of mullh goJd. As you are probably aware, this portion of the shir. has been systematically neglected, and is a consequence our roads are now almost impassable; a brildgeo is urgently required at Sprint Creek ea:d also several culverts on that road to make itat all passable in the winter season. As I do not know the names of the probable candidates, it would be little use in saying much at present upon that subject, hut I think we are bound in justice to ourselves to scratch out the names of all the retiring oeunoillors on the polling day, and endeavor to get a little fresh blood introduced bt the cou...

O H I P S. -4---- 'Toby takes a pilgrimage to Yea ! Yea, verily, it came to pass that with a friend Toby went on a visit even unto the for off city, called " Yea," and this is the story of their journey, my masters! We went unto the house of one " Watt" and did there obtain a buggy and a horse,-and such a horse John did say unto us, "He goeth lame until he is warm, when behold hle wil be even as fresh like unto a lark," but alase he did not get " warm" either going out or coming in, and lost not his lameness. Behold we went over the hill of Josephine and did then journey through bogs, holes, and quagmires for many miles, until we came unto a "pinch" known as "Cotton's" in the land. It had ere this become dark, and our horse being quite knocked up we were sore troubled in our minds, and said one to the other " what shall we do " and Toby said unto his friend, "get now a board and write theron ' oats and chaff' and may be the animal will follow you up the hill," but no board could we ...

MELBOURNE LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 20 July 1878

MELBOURNE LETfER. (raRO OUR OWN COttnISPONDENT.) " Parliamentary proceedings have ihardly advanced so far beyond their :preliminary stages, the introduction of the Reform Bill coming on too late to enable me to give any particulars of its reception in this letter. Its contents, however, are tolerably well known, and amount simply to an annihilation of the ;Legislative Council for all practical purposes. The reply to the uddreos has been quietly adopted by both ,Chambers without much discussion, but .the signs of discord in the Ministerial pamp still continue. Mr Woods has anparently provoked some active an :tagonism, and the way he was first attacked by Messrs Dwyer and Gaun .on; and subsequently sat upon by his chief, must have been both strange and ,unpleasant. It is pretty well known that Mr Woods and Mr Berry do not ." hit it" very well, and Mr Lalor is also reported to be on terms the reverse of amicable with the Premier, so that p?uould an early reconstruction of the :.Cabinet...

CONTRA CT'S. (To the Editor of the Standard.) S?n,-Observing in your last issue that a contract had be n lot, by three councillors, to the amount of £30, for repairs to the Acheron bridge, 1 as a contract,'r would like to know whether this sort of hole and corner business is to be tolcrat.d ? Some time ago a mutton was passed in the council that any contraot over £5 wua to be advertised and tenders called for ; but if it little clique can manage the alffair of the council, tte loca contractors may leave the district at once, as they will find, like " Othtllo," that their occupation is gone, at least hoso of .us who do not happen to be in favor with those who have the lotting of work.-Yours, &c., FAtin PLAY.

From Michael M'Assey, asking com pensation for a journey undertaken by him in serving summonses on defaulting ratepayers residing on the outskirts of the shire, and stating that the time allowed him before the court day was not sufficiently long to complete his work (r Webster was opposed to paying for work not properly performed, and said it was likely he got well paid for not serving the summonses by taking tip. YEA. -4-t-- (FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) A serious accident happened last week to a ,carrier, Mr Gill, of Dougalook. In returning home, after delivering some goods in the '-tiownship, near Mr Hume's, his horses shied, Scausing them to bolt. When jumping from the wasgen, with the hope of stopping them, 'he reins'caught his feet, tripping and pre Slpit-iting him beneath the animals' feet. Not i only was he'trampled on by the horses, but both the fore and hind wheels of the wnggon passed over his lead taking the skin off his temple and leaving an ugly bruise on the upper part of the skull, which, wonderful to pay, was not broken. As soon as the accidlnt became known the unfortunate man was brought into the township, where moedical asplstance was obtained and his injuries "attended to. WREATHS OF SMOKE. A MIDSUMMER IDYL. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 27 July 1878

WREATHIIS OF SMOKICE. A MtDSUMMEIt. IDYI.. It is a scorching hot day in July; one of those midsummer days when there is not the slightest breeze stirring from sunrise to sunset, when the fierce sun mercilessly pours down his rays upon the glistening stones, upon every particle of dust, upon every unblinded window, which, receiving his fiery beams. become new points of reflection for the blinding light, and hurl it back with fiercer -':Itensity at sufforing humanity. ,3y the sea-shore at Llntdudno the hot, yellow sends almost burned the feet that pressed them ; the sails hung idly down and flapped Iezily against the masts of the vessels ; rowers lay listlessly along the boats, unable to use the oers, so intensely scorching was the Sheat. f the sun upon their bronasd faces and rugged forms. Away from the tnattered, lightly dressed crowds on tihe beach a solitary individual, evidently regard less of aught else but spending his time in the coolest manner possible under-,existing circum ...

COURTING DAYS. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 27 July 1878

COUITING DAYS. The next morning, after a night of misery, ahe remembehred her promise. She ensdled her bay pony, 13urley, and went galloping up among the hills. .Perhaeps Tuss..int could tell her more 'than she had at first thought. The old house stood under a jutting rock that projected fron the mountain side. She tied up her pony, and knocked at the front door. It was instantly opened, and betrayed a home of Cr~asus. like wealth. The rooms were not large, but beauti ful. • The walls were of polished rose. wood, against which hung nagnificent paintings in pmassive gilt frames. Car pets of purple velvet lay beneath her feet; and what was htot unappropriate,. that cool May morning on the high mountain top, a glowing fire burnt in the grate. Toussaint was reading. And, egain, the President had been authorised at a-previous meeting of the council to get the same work done; but when he found that it would be such an expensive undertaking, be declined to let the work and reported the matter to the council, when notion was taken as above.
