Letters to the editor: behrcoll2 @ aol.com [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 18 February 1999

Letters to the editor: behrcoll2 @ aol.com Use of "N" word reinforces racism By Tony Green Indiana Daily Student Indiana University The time has come when I can finally say I would be much happier if I never heard that word again in my life. Unfortunately, the word reverberates through popular culture like a bad headache. With the movement of rap music from African-American music to pop music, that word has been a silent parasite working beneath the surface of society. The overexposure 10 this word in has desensitized many people to its horrible roots and stretched its use to unimaginable limits. Chris Rock showed me it is out of control. In his infamous HBO special, "Bring the Pain," he drew a weak distinction between "black people" and the "N" word. Whether he realized it, he gave many people the opportunity they had been waiting for. Now people can cite his show and say things they have secretly wanted to for years. While watching a replay of this stand-up show recently...

The censorship of connotation [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 18 February 1999

The censorship of connotation The Critic TON STUBBS Last August, a man named Timothy Boomer was charged with violating a 101 -year-old Michigan state law when he jokingly swore at his friends after falling out of his canoe. The incident took place on the Rifle River near the Jack Pine Trail recreation area where a woman and her two children were standing within earshot, according to Deputy Kenneth Socia, who issued the ticket. The specifics of the law that Boomer broke prohibit the use of vulgar or insulting language in the presence or earshot of women or children. The misdemeanor carries a fine of $ 100 or a penalty of imprisonment up to 90 days. "This archaic law singles out women for special treatment without any reasonable justification — a practice held unconstitutional long ago," says Kary L. Moss, Executive Director of the ACLU of Michigan. "The law is based upon outmoded stereotypes about women's sensitive nature and need for protection." Moss is exactly right abou...

A Flower in the Garden of Life God answers prayers: He's so good to me [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 18 February 1999

A Flower in the Garden of Life God answers prayers: He's so good to me SHANNON WEBERi Did you go to the "Is there meaning to evil and suffering?" seminar? Well, I wasn't going to go. I happened to be on the phone with my mom, while she was at work, and her boss said that it was something I should try to go to. So, guess what—I did. I didn't know exactly what I was getting myself into, but I went. It was a forum that was brought to us via satellite. Dr. Ravi Zacharias gave a speech. He talked about three levels. He said that if there is evil, then there is good. If there is good, then there has to be moral law. If there is moral law, then there has to be a moral- giver. He also discussed "steps". Dr. Zacharias explained that in these steps there is an author. This author works within a story line, and the story line leads to worship. Submission to the author and binding together creates the love for God and fellow man. There are many other opinions to this, of course, and s...

Barbies with tattoos raise a few eyebrows [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 18 February 1999

Barbies with tattoos raise a few eyebrows By Maryln Schwartz Knight-Ridder Newspapers I have an aunt who is a doomsayer. But in this instance, I'm afraid she is all too right. She has been watching all this mess going on the Senate floor with pursed lips. All along, she has predicted that standards and decorum will now slip everywhere. "Once behavior like this is discussed openly in the hallowed halls of law and government," my aunt has warned repeatedly, "who knows what other slips in taste are bound to follow?" Well, they have, Aunt Dorothy, they really have. Please sit down it this is coming as a complete shock. Barbie has gotten tattooed. Yes, I'm talking about Barbie. That pristine doll who once wanted only to shop for designer clothes until she dropped now conies with a set of do-it-yourself wet-andstick-on tattoos. OK, these stick-ons aren't whips and chains, just flowers and butterflies. But, still, the door has been opened. And for every tattoo t...

Now that cupid's gone, college couples need to evaluate relationships [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 18 February 1999

Now that cupid's gone, college couples need to evaluate relationships By Christine Tatum College Press Exchange CHICAGO (CPX) - There's no time like right now to evaluate your current relationship, but before you do, two Ohio psychologists who have written a new book identifying problem male behavior insist first thing's first. "This goes for men and women," said Joseph Rock, a clinical psychologist for more than 18 years and co-author of Let's Face It, Men Are @$$#%\?$ What Women Can Do About It, sold for $12.95 by Health Communications Inc. (Thai's "Assholes" if you look closely.) "Pluck out the stars he or she planted in your eyes on Valentine's Day because that's the only way you're going to judge your arrangement objectively." With graduation rolling around in just a few months, many young couples are desperately trying to determine their next steps. Chances are increasingly slim they'll end up married right out of school. In 1980, the median age for men and women tying...

No parties for 30 days, fraternities and sororities declare at Mich. State By Peggy Walsh-Sarnecki Knight-Ridder Newspapers Michigan State University's fraternities and sororities will be missing something for 30 days, parties. Responding to criticism, greeks at MSU called this week for a 30-day moratorium on social activities, while they ponder their core values and the reputation they carry for heavy drinking. "I think it's an excellent decision that the greek community all meet together and discuss what needs to be done," Rebecca Gillespie, president of Alpha Omicron Pi, said Friday. "I think that we realize that substance abuse isa serious issue facing education in the United States today, so I believe the greek system is trying to be leaders addressing this for the whole university, said Gillespie, 20, a junior from Garden City. HBO claims award-winning documentary on hazing was staged [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 18 February 1999

HBO claims award-winning documentary on hazing was staged College Press Exchange ALLENTOWN, Pa. (CPX) - Determining whether a documentary about the secret dealings of one fraternity should be heralded or harangued depends on whose story you believe. The way Alpha Tau Omega brothers at Muhlenberg College tell it, two students from New York University claiming to be shooting a fictional comedy, call it an "Animal House for the '90s," if you will, paid them to act out graphic and violent acts of hazing. They went along with the gig, encouraging ATO brothers past and present to pose as pledges in the film. It was all great fun until their "acting" turned up at the Sundance Film Festival as something other than comedy: a documentary. The HBO-financed work, titled "Frat House," won rave reviews and an award for its graphic and violent scenes, but will sit in the can, representatives of the cable network say. "There is no way this will air on HBO," Shelia Nevins, vice president of ...

Quarterback sues McDonald's, says he found worm in his burger [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 18 February 1999

Quarterback sues McDonald's, says he found worm in his burger College Press Exchange EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (CPX) - McDonald's deserves no break after serving a hamburger that contained a wiggling worm, a quarterback at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire says. Sean Hoolihan has filed suit against the Eau Claire fast-foot restaurant and its parent company, seeking more than $5,000 and an apology, according to records filed in the Eau Claire County Circuit Court. Hoolihan, quarterback on the university's team that reached the semifinals of the NCAA Division III playoffs last fall, said he bought the bad burger June 13, 1997. While driving down an Interstate, Hoolihan said he had just taken a bite out of the burger when he first noticed a worm crawling inside of it. "He got sick to his stomach," his attorney, Charles Harris, told the Associated Press. "It still makes him queasy, the idea of eating a fast-food burger." Hoolihan said he rewrapped the burger and put in a freezer ...

Magazine stole 'Monica Lisa' idea from Penn State student, professor says [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 18 February 1999

Magazine stole 'Monica Lisa' idea from Penn State student, professor says College Press Exchange STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (CPX) - A professor at Penn State is accusing The New Yorker of ripping off its Feb. 8 cover from a portrait painted by one of his students. Richard Alden, assistant professor of architecture, doubts it's a coincidence that a cover idea he presented to New Yorker editors in October was submitted by another artist for this month's magazine. Alden insists the magazine got the idea from the "Monica Lisa" painting he showed off that was done by Alysia J. DeAntonio, a sophomore who was in his visualcommunications class last fall. DeAntonio's painting features a version of the "Mona Lisa" with Lewinsky's face. After his visit, Alden said he never heard back from editors and was sickened when he saw the recept cover. "I felt like I had been mugged or robbed," he said. A spokeswoman for The New Yorker said the magazine believes that the cover illustration, which was do...

Police shooting has racial tensions at boiling point [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 18 February 1999

Police shooting has racial tensions at boiling point By Josh Getlin, Los Angeles Times NEW YORK _ On a cool winter night, Amadou Diallo took a walk outside his Bronx apartment and returned after 12:45 p.m. This is all that is known of his last moments, except that he was suddenly cut down by a hail of police gunfire, 41 shots in all, as he stood in the hallway. Seconds later, the four police gunmen, who said they were investigating a serial rapist in the area, discovered that the 22-year-old West African immigrant was unarmed. As they hurridl y radioed for assistance, several of the officers appeared dazed and stunned, according to police sources and onlookers who gathered at the scene last week. Although few details have emerged since then, the story has shocked New Yorkers and triggered national protests. There have been furious street demonstrations by black leaders and bitter criticisms of Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who has been accused of running a police department that r...

So far, Brazilian economic crisis having limited global impact [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 18 February 1999

So far, Brazilian economic crisis having limited global impact By Paul Blustein, The Washington Post WASHINGTON _ Well, maybe it doesn't matter that much if the eighthlargest economy in the world goes down the chute. That's the verdict global financial markets appear to be rendering on Brazil's economic crisis, which so far, at least has had a remarkably mild impact on other countries and regions. Exactly one month has passed since Brazil was forced to devalue its currency, the real, and Brazil's outlook has gone from bad to wretched since then, with interest rates soaring, the real tumbling and the nation's economy predicted to contract by as much as 6 percent this year. Yet in marked contrast with the worldwide upheaval in stock, bond and currency markets that followed the crises in Russia in August and Asia in the months before that. markets have quickly shrugged off their initial jitters over Brazil's collapsing economy. The Dow Jones industrial average is hovering close...

Russian premier insists Yeltsin must finish term [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 18 February 1999

Russian premier insists Yeltsin must finish term By David Hoffman, The Washington Post MOSCOW _ Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov, facing Russia's restive political and financial elite, insisted Saturday that ailing President Boris Yeltsin be allowed to complete his term despite widespread criticism that he is no longer able to lead. Yeltsin's second term runs until summer 2000, but his long absences because of illness in recent months have set off an intense scramble among his would-be successors and renewed calls for Yeltsin to step down to make way for early elections. If Yeltsin resigned, Primakov would become acting president under the constitution and elections would be held within three months. "I oppose the idea that the president should step down before his constitutional term expires," Primakov told reporters at a meeting of the influential Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, a private, elite group of politicians, analysts, scholars and businessmen. Yeltsin should...

Painting of nude man displayed in legislature banned [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 18 February 1999

Painting of nude man displayed in legislature banned By Matthew Mosk, The Bahj more _Sun BALTIMORE _ The painting that was pulled from the walls of the Maryland House office building in Annapolis was a classical depiction of a male nude, legs crossed discreetly, eyes in contemplation. But it did draw some protests from the more easily offended. So they took it down. The decision was viewed as benign in the corridors of the Lowe House Office Building, where virtually all of the art depicts sailboats, landscapes, birds and other innocuous scenery. But, as often happens when decisions about an are made in government circles, controversy tagged along. Melissa Shatto, the 28-year-old Harford County artist who painted the offending canvas, feels the artwork's abrupt removal was not only rash, but an act unbecoming freedom of expression. "I'm completely aghast at this whole situation," Shatto said. "Heaven forbid you glorify the human form. It's like we're heading back to Victorian...
