FOOD VALUE OF KAFFIR CORN . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 12 March 1896

FOOD VALUE OF KAFFIR CORN . P ROF . GEO . L . HOLTBR , Chemist to the Oklahoma Experiment Station , writes : Not very much has been done with Kaffir corn to determine its value as a food product . Analyses made from the whole plant , sampled at the time the crop was harvested , give the following results : Water , 76 . 13 per cent ; fat , . 78 per cent ; fiber , 6 . 16 per cent ; carbohydrates , 11 . 96 per cent ; protein , 3 . 2 per cent ; ash , 1 . 75 per cent . Given a total yield of five and a half tons per acre we would get : Water , 8 , 374 . 3 pounds ; fat , 85 . 8 pounds ; fiber , 677 . 6 pounds ; carbohydrates , 1 , 315 . 6 pounds ; protein , 354 . 2 ; ash , 192 . 5 . This , of course , is calculated from the green fodder as a basis . The value of a food product is not determined by the number of pounds yielded per acre , but the amount of digestible material produced . Assuming the grain Kaffir corn to have the same coefficients of digestibility as the plant—it certainly m...

KIND WORDS FROM COLORADO [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 12 March 1896

KIND WORDS FROM COLORADO I take the present opportunity of acknowledging my appreciation of your valuable journal . I especially like the position taken and the effort made to educate the people on bi-metallism . The average Coloradan has espoused the cause of free coinage of silver at the ratio of 16 to 1 so long and earnestly that all efforts to arouse an intelligent understanding of the subject in other sections of country is highly appreciated . Individually I recommend the government ownership of the means of production and distribution . Marshall , Colo . G . W . W . —A committee appointed by the fruit growers of western Michigan has compiled statistics of fruit shipments aggregated 4 , 575 cars of 400 bushels each , besides the heavy water shipments . The committee will recommend that a man be sent to New York with samples of Michigan bushel baskets to see if a personal presentation of the case will not aid in securing better freight rates to eastern points . PROSPEROUS FARME...

Women go on , heedlessly ignoring the dangers that lie tight in the path of their thoughtlessness . They neglect little warnings until they get used to them .
