FRIDAY EVENING. OCT. 20, 1871. advocate of "protection to American indus try," (having served ten years' apprentice sliip under one of the best men our city ever had, Isaac K. Davis,) and during this period my position as a hired man has made me more familiar with the views of this class than others who occupy higher social positions. The continued struggle between protec tion anil free trade, with varying success on either side, demonstrates that the principles of social economy are imperfectly under stood. In my personal intercourse with journeymen mechanics 1 have found the difficulty to make them understand tho ad vantage of protection to be that they were working more for their employers than for themselves. I have asked some of the largest iron workers to make an exhibit of a year's operation, showing how much was paid for material, rent, taxes, and wages, and incidental expenses, but without suc cess. I cannot but admit a feeling that there is a little jealousy at the bottom ...
