All letters and commu nications should be addressed to J. M. Bassett, Editor-in-< hk-f. The Great Raisin Country. Notwithstanding <>ur grvai supefi* ority of climate and soil, we are ami have ever labored under gr»>at disad vantages in some tort pects. VVhile we boast of raising tin; best grapes in the world and nearly all other fruits which grow in any climate, from the tropics to the frigid zone, in greater perfec tion than can be produced in any other country, we are too remote from the great centers of commerce to suc cessfully market the perishable pro ducts of which California is so justly proud. Hence farmers who own land cupable of producing fruits that would challenge the admiration of the world are driven to growing cereals or rais ing stock. There is absolutely no limit to the capacity of our soil to produce every va...

CITY AND COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER. WEDNESDAY AUGUST 12, 187 L Our Water Supply. Our citizens are apt to complain of the quality of water furnished them, and some find fault with both the quality and quantity. By-and-by we shall confine ourselves almost exclu sively to the latter half of the com plaint. Where the future city of Los Angeles is to obtain her supply of water, is one of the unsolved prob lems. The present water company is. if we are correctly informed, entitled to but ten inches of water from the river. That, even with the reservoir accumulation, scarcely meets the present demands of the company. What will they do when the city num bers twenty thousand people ? The company's present facilities are inad equate, and thoughtful citizens are asking themselves where Los Angeles is to obtain her supply of water. It cannot be had from the springs and the ten-Inch river stream. It is doubtful, more than doubtful, if arte sian wells may be sunk. The experi ments of Mr. Beaudry in th...

£0$ grtgfltf §rtt*ML CVTY AND COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER. THURSDAY AUGUST 13, 1874. State University. The efforts of the Board of Regents to force Professor Carr from the State University and thu9 destroy the Department of Agriculture, is attract ing the attention of the farmers throughout the State, and is now drawing forth comments and opinions from all sources, nearly all of which are the reverse of complimentary to those members of the Board who per mitted themselves to be led by the money changers and bank owners. It is asserted by those who should know whereof they speak, that the dislike of the Board of Regents for Professor Carr is due solely to his stout defense of the Department of Agriculture, and his sincere affilia tion with the Grangers, and his main tenance of the principles they advance. How true this is we do not know, but we suspect it to be entirely correct. On the 23d ult., the Regents held a meeting, and by the following vote actually requested Professor Carr to resi...

£0$ JUfldco SuraUl. CITY AND COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER. FRIDAY AUGUST 14, 1874. An Explanation. Yesterday's Herald contained the " reflections of an old citizen of Los Angeles after visiting Santa Barbara." The reflections were comparisons be tween the improvements of the two places named, and Los Angeles suf fered by the comparison. The "old citizen" then lapses into the world of wonder, and wonders why Santa Bar bara should have paved streets, im proved sidewalks ami flue public build ings, while Los Angeles with her large population and great wealth is noticeably deficient in these improve ments. These queries may all be an swered, though we doubt if the correct answers will add to our city's credit at home or her reputation abroad. A sin gle item will illustrate the situation of affairs and clearly explain why Los Angeles has no more to show for her money—why we have not more graded streets and more fine public buildings: A little sewer on Commercial street not exceeding three hundr...
