Monday the monument erected at Ap pomatox by North Carolina in memory of the Confederates front that State who fought to the end of the war. was deci cated. The North Carolina troops were the last to hold out against the Federal army, and this fact had .much to do, doubtless, with the desire of the Tar Heel State to be the first in the field in showing the gratitude of her people for her boys who wore the gray.-Mansfield Journal. " Champ .: Clarks • Letter [Special Washington Letter.] ECENTLY I was on a lecture tour through Michigan. An item appeared in the Detroit Free Press while I was among the Michigauders which furnishes much food for reflection. Mr. Factory In I Spector Eikhoff states in his report that there are as many men out of em ployment today in Detroit as there were in 18j3. Carry the news to Hon. C. B. Landis and General Charles Hi. Grosvenor, those palpitating patriots who are fond of asserting that there is not an idle man in America who can not find work at remunerative wages if he so desires. If they will insert that portion of their stump speeches in the Detroit papers they will most probably find employ ment in abundance at home without gadding off to Europe and the Philip pines....
