Ehle mew orth- trot, SATURDAY, JULY 25, 1874. A MONTANIAN IN CHICAGO. A Glimpse at Salient Features. EDITOR N~E NORTII-WEST : Our national day of crackers and acci dents passed off quietly with us, in fact the streets were dull and so wanting of the usual bustle that a stranger would suppose we Lhad lately been visited with some frightful ipidemic thereby depopulating the city; however, the initiated knew what was up, and where to look for the "lost mob " IN SUBURBAN RETREATS. And quiet, shady nooks, where flows the .ool lager at "a nickel" a glass. Then there was a few places not suburban-as, for instance, the "Tivoli Garden," corner of Clark and Washington, the grandest garden in the West. Here are hundreds of warbling songsters, beautiful fountains, spotted and green turtles, stuffed birds and walls (for it is all under roof), adorned with elegant landscapes. Here eighty bar rels of Bewer & Bcmis' extract of malt each twenty-four hours moistens the parch ed throats of Chicago...

FATURDAY,AUIG. e, 1674. THE STORY OF FIVE ACES. A Litttle Game at the Arkansas Hot Springe-How Colonel Gordon Defend ed His Honor. It is a story of five aces, says an exchange. It was pt the Hot Springs of Arkansas, where only gentlemen and ladies-not or dinary men and women go. Ephraim Tag gart, of Mississippi, and Colonel Charles Gordon, of Galveston, Texas, were there, and they were engaged in a pleasant game of cards. The Colonel with muchi"suavity, and a like amount of presence of mind shiwed thit aces, and immediately r b ki hts watch. Then for somenemarkible reasdn, !Ephraiih Taggart got angry and said there had been cheating; he never in his life before knew that a single pack or deck of cards had five aces. Col. Gordon had no time to argue the matter, however. He could simplyaee the astonishing fact that he had been in suited by the Mississippian. Most men, it st...
