"W w lw gaitxj ltorau. ASTORIA, OREGON: FRIDAY ...NOVEMBER 7. ISM Gov. Cleveland sliould get mar ried right away. Blaise -will have plenty of time now to finish writing his book. Wonder how much St. John really was paid for running in this cam paign? . Ik 1880 it was John Kelly: in 1884 it ia St. John. The "Prohibition" candidate has earned whatever he agreed to work for. It would be a good joke on him if his employers re fused to pay him. Tammanx was sold and John Kel ly's prestige is paralyzed. He and his henchmen went solid for Cleve land, and did their best, but his own candidate Grant for mayor was beaten out of sight. The Post Intelligencer is not very well posted on Oregon politics. In its issue of the 2nd inst, it says that Oregon "will elect a legislature next Tuesday, which will choose at its next session a successor to Senator Slater." A little off. The Republicans lost New Jersey by the remark of Bev. Dr. Burchard, one of Blaine's "fool friends," who said that opposed to...

'& J t gaittf gtatfan. ASTORIA, OREGON: SATURDAY. .NOVEMBER 8. 1834 CLEVELAND PROBABLY ELECTED. Fob the first time in twenty-eight years the Democrats seem to have won in the quadrennial contest and Grover Cleveland is probably elected twenty-second president of the United States. Blaine carried on the fight against most tremendous odds. At tacked in front and rear, forsaken by thousands of his own party, cnt and hacked by powerful joumals, maligned and aspersed by equally powerful journals; his fight -was one long de fense against the most potent com bination of forces that ever opposed an American presidential candidate. His defeat is not a Democratic vic tory; his success could not have been termed a Eepublican triumph. . It would have been due to his own per sonal exertions. Two weeks after his nomination it was evident that the Republicans could have put up a more available party candidate; but his almost unanimous nomination had demonstrated that Blaine -was nearest the Rep...

ra ffllu gnttjf totiatt. ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY. .NOVEMBERS ISM THE LINE OF OUR PRESIDENTS. With the exception of Zacbary Taylor, the country has never till now elected a president with as little public experience as Cleveland pos sesses. Much is said of mere avail ability; but important as this has come to be regarded in the lexicon of the politician, the nation has always been in the habit of selecting its chie' magistrate from statesmen of high standing and extended public service. In the earlier days of the republic the presidency went as a matter of course to the foremost leader of the party. The president was named then very muoh as the premier is se lected in England by the right of recognized intellectual and political ascendancy. For the first forty years the heads of the republic were chosen from the men who had srent their lives in the public service, and had become pre-eminent in the public councils by their great abilities.
