Editor Democratic Statesman: A petition bas been circulated among the citizens ol Austin during the last week, which has received the signa tures of numerous leading men with out, I believe, that sagacious prudence tubt ordinarily characterizes some of the subscribers. The ostensible object of this 'petition is the building of a city and coufitj hospital in Austin, and the plan proposed is in substance the following: The city and county are each to take ten beds in the hospi tal, paying therefor $35 per month per bed, the contract to continue in lorce for five years. Thus we hare an institution with a ca pacity of twenty beds for which the city and county pay $G00O a year, or $30,000 in the five years dur ing which they agree to pay fcr the beds.
