FARM AND FIRESIDE. Silica, or sand, alumina, or eltj, and ! carbonate of lime, are the? principal ingredients of the ?oil. The opeo, porous, or sandy, in whore the ?ilioa is the main ingredient. The ?tiff, clay soil it that ia which aluiuiaa predominates-, and what it called a loam, contain? nearly equal proportions of silica, alumina and carbonate of time, furnishing tha beat soil for till? age. Each o? these soils requires a diff? erent treatment for their improvement. Tbe siliuious, or sandy, is deficient in humus, or vegetable and animal mat? ter. This can be supplied by the ad? tJition of muck, found in swamp?, or low places; by plowing ander green' crops, either clover, rye, or oats; ?nd i by the application of barn-yard manures- The open, porous nature; of the soil has permitted the, humus to! either evaporate, or sink beneath the roots of the growing crop. Among other changes proposed, some desire to do away with county judges, county treas. urcT8 and supervisors, and appoint three justices in each township, who shall preside at county courts, elect the sheriffs, :;ud take charge of the schools, and poor houses. These justice? it is naturally presumed will do the work of supervisors and other officers at the very lowest cost. SHENANDOAH HERALD IS rU*LlKBl?I> WaSlLT ST 8HENAND0AH HERALD PUBLISHING CO WOODSTOCK, VIRGINIA. Wednesday Feb. 6 1878 Leiter frena Rleiaaenal. The diligence with which the senators I and delegates from our judical district | have watched our interests in the mat? ter of re-districting the State for circuit judges makes interference with the 18th circuit among the most improbable things of the sessiou. From the cons- i mittcts having the werk iu charge, j three reports will emanate, and all of them let us severely alone. Very little talk with the members around quite satisfied me, that if all these reports shall fail nothing will be done this winter. I found here quite a formida bk ai ray of plans, prepared by out-1 . some of which will be pushed by j the lobby, aud also a lew uuder-cuiTcnt j acbemee looking to the gratification of pcisonal ambitions ; but neither tne committees, nor the General Assembly, as such, have any intention of doing mere or less than to thoroughly...

FARM AND FIRESIDE. aHSHkttrfrife-What I* &?, Believing that much of what is called domestic medicine?frequent and ill advised dosing?to do much mor? harm than good, the i?tm><i?i AyrienUuritt bas, as a general rule, kept its columns free from the many recipes sent as "the best thing in the world," and "sur? cures" for various diseases. While we are opposed to fiequent medication for ?very little ailing, we think that every mother should understand the general Laws of health, and sufficient of diseases to know when it is safe for her to apply some simple remedy, and when the case is sufficiently grave to make it ne? cessary to call in medical aid at once. In many cases the success of the phvsi tian depends upon his being called at once, while it is toe often the case that he is not sent for until alit?e medical knowledge of the parents and uighbors is exhausted, and the patient ?till grow? worse.
