Superior Court Parking Lot Easy Money for Lancaster Parking Enforcement BAD DAY AT THE OFFICE: This City of Lancaster Parking Enforcement Officer did not stick around long enough to issue any citations after he noticed our taking photographs of him patrolling the parking lot at Antonovich Courthouse. Instead, he chose to make a quick exit down Avenue M, leaving empty-handed and Lancaster coffers a little lighter in the process, and the pockets of The People doing business at court that moment a little heavier. LEAP is Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. www. leap. cc 14 JULY 1877: The Great Strike of 1877 begins as workers walk out on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad . Railroad Unions demand better working conditions, protest recent 10 percent cuts in pay, the second since the Depression began, and demand redress for their many grievances. Strikes spread to other railroads from New England to the Mississippi and soon from the Atlantic to the Pacific. All the great cities are pulled into the struggle which is finally settled by Militia and Federal Troops . But it serves notice that Labor and Capital are on a new footing; that until reconciling social ideas are brought to bear, conflict between the two forces will be sanguinary, wasteful and titanic. Sympathetic Strikes of factory workers and miners engulf industry. Overnight the nation grinds to a halt. Sympathetic Strikes are a novelty and speak of a growing understanding of the distress shared by industrial workers. 16 JULY 1877: Violenc...

person operating the vehicle is conducting official census business on behalf of the federal gub-mnt’. mm WHY ARE POLICE VEHICLES PARKED BESIDE A RED CURB? The Political Observer asked a Public Affairs Officer at Lancaster CHP station for clarification on the Black & Whites parked along the red curb at Antonovich Courthouse – another situation several people noticed and brought to our attention for clarification. The CHP officer said, in his opinion, most likely, in the situation as described at Antonovich Courthouse, the reason lawmen parked in a red zone near the court entrance instead of in a parking space much farther away was over a fear of vandalism to the vehicle, and to better secure sensitive items inside the patrol car, such as computers and weapons. Brown served on the firm’s board from 1987 until his run for U. S. president in 1992, but he was not employed as a lobbyist. The Whitman campaign bases the lobbyist rap on a phone call Brown made on behalf of Milan Panic, a campaign contributor, and the founder of ICN Pharmaceuticals ( now Valeant Pharmaceuticals International), the parent company of ICN Biomedicals. The pharmaceuticals company was then being accused by the Food and Drug Administration of false advertising of Ribivarin, an antiviral drug the company produced. ICN later settled the case, agreeing to pay hefty fines to settle civil charges, but admitted no wrongdoing. Brown admitted to calling Rep. Henry Waxman of California, the then-chairman of a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee, to ask what he knew about the case. Waxman told The Washington Post at the time that he“ looked at it as Jerry Brown calling to lobby me for his friends and supporters.” Strictly speaking, Brown was not calling on behalf of ICN Biomed...

She [ census worker] emphasized that not once in the history of the nation had data from the census been shared with other Like the first worker who visited my house, the second was confused about the aggressive nature of the State. I explained to her that, as Ludwig von Mises observed, all government action ultimately resorts to the use or threat of Census Bureau, a second worker arrived at my door. While I did not feel threatened by her at any time, she was far more insistent and obnoxious than her predecessor, harrying me long after I had made it clear that I did not wish to answer any questions. The manner in which she attempted to convince me of the importance of complying with the census and the reasoning she used were deeply revealing of the ideologically Statist thinking that is pervasive today. After I informed the worker that I had previously refused to answer any questions on principle — and thus that I would refuse to answer her questions — she warned me that participati...

As Etienne la Boettie exhorted in his brilliant essay Discours de la Servitude Volontaire, “Resolve to serve no more, and you are at once freed. I do not ask that you place hands upon the tyrant to topple him over, but simply that you support him no longer; then you will behold him, like a great Colossus whose pedestal has been pulled away, fall of his own weight and break into pieces.” My aim in refusing to participate in the census was twofold: to explicitly withdraw my consent — or, as Ayn Rand called it,“ the sanction of the victim” — and to use my experience as a starting point to explain the aggressive nature of the State to others, including the census workers; for it is merely the widespread recognition of the illegitimacy of the State that would cause it to dissolve. The census is an example of a government program that I refused to comply with, knowing that I could be fined for doing so. While the census is not the most barbaric or intrusive activity conducted by the State...

That may be true, but according to the same Times report, the disappearing surplus was caused by several things, including Proposition 13, a measure state voters approved — and Brown opposed — that cut residents’ property taxes, and reduced state revenue: New York Times, April 5, 1992: Mr. Brown is widely criticized for not heading off a taxpayers’ revolt that produced Proposition 13, the ballot measure that in 1978 slashed property taxes and sent the state’s finances reeling.
