AN ESSAY ON TULARE VALLEY, [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 8 October 1859

AN ESSAY ON TULARE VALLEY, BY L. O. STERNS, ESQ. Its Resources and Prospects. Delivered at Visalia, May, 1859. Fellow Citizens:—lt is with more thau ordinary diifidc.ire that 1 assume the important task of delivering before this association, 'an address, because I know that when a person undertakes that responsibility, you think he agrees to instruct his auditory. If his subject is that of Education, it very naturally expects to hear the discussion of some important principle, the application of which would in some way facilitate intellectual acquisition, and give a new impulse to human progress If Agriculture, some important hints and suggestions beneficial to the husbandman in his arduous though pleasant occupation in tilling the soil. If Political Economy, fl deseantation on our peculiar relationship with our government—its practical workings—perhaps an entreaty to return to old land-marks of political safety ; or, the advocacy of new theories of government, tending to the social...

Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 8 October 1859

To the Public—To-day we present to our readers an enlarged edition of the paper, and under a new name, that of the VISALIA WEEKLY DELTA. Our business demanded the enlargement, and our country required it. As to the name, we choose it both for its beauty and adaptation to the place where the paper is published—this section of country being precisely similar to, (only on a smaller scale) the country watered by the river Nile in Egypt, and to which the word "Delta" was originally applied. The Kaweah river spreads immediately upon iia enterinir.the valley, forming the two sides cl a triangle, and Tule Lake the third ,• within this space the land is irrigated bj the waters of the said river, and at certain seasons, portions of it overflows in imitation of the great Nile. J Whether the rich bottoms irrigated —i>y tne waters of the Kaweah will prove as productive, and support as large a population as did Est arototyp n Egypt, yet re mains try.be seen. So far as cultivation has b...

From Fresno City. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 8 October 1859

From Fresno City. SEPTfcMBKII 30, lfti3o. Messrs. Editors: —As you seem to entirely ignore the existence of such a city as I have dated my letter from, we intend to inform the readers of your valuable paper that such is indeed the fact. We will not, however, excite your jealousy by quoting our superior advantages—earthly, aqueous, and atmospheric. The troubles and trials of election are all over, and we now have time to think, write, and enjoy our otium cum dignitate in peace. The extremely hot weather of the preceding summer has given place to more moderate days and cool refreshing sleep-in-during nights, and numerous travellers, 1 taking the advantage of change, are wending ; their way southward to find a home among ! the shady oaks of your beautiful city. Visalia, which a few years .-ago was comparatively unknown, has, through the medium of the Newspaper and the Overland Mail, acquired, we lad, quite a celebrity, and man) an honest, industrious family, who has been toiling for ye...

Taaekk. McCahii.l& Co.—We direct the attention of our merchants and others to the advertisement of the above firm, which appears in another column. This is one of the oldest established Dry Ooods Houses in the State, and by a long ways the largest Dry fioods importing House on the Pacific coast. They occupy 60 fee. on Front street, and 10-5 on Sacramento. Both of these immense premises are mainly occupied as sales rooms. v Another Pill. The Alta denies positively that it publishes quack doctors' advertisements. It seems to have voluntarily abandoned all claims to veracity, and asserts roundly what can instantly be shown to be false. — Within the fortnight, it published, in the most prominent page, a notice nearly half a column in length, with large display heads, signed by the most notorious charlatan doctor in the State of California, in which it was announced that the practice of the said quack had increased so rapidly, etc., that it was necessary, etc., to do so and s...

Credit to whom Credit is Due.—We must be distinctly understood as giving credit to our cotemporary of the Democratic Standard, of Sacramento, for being the fastest institution in the State. We received, here, a "Standard" twenty days befo-re it teas published, according to date. Truly, these are fast times! Wonder, if the election of Judge to Printer, admits of such a transition in the optics ? Favors.—We are under obligations to Mr. Bequette, of Heston's Express, for files of papers, during the week. NEWSPAPER PATRONAGE.—The following from the San Juan Press so exactly coincides with our own sentiments and feelings respecting the matter of which it treats, and is so much better expressed than we could do it ourself. that we adopt it: " A paper, conducted with honest purposes, devotod to the welfare of its particular community, and to the best interest of the country at large, has a right to assert its claim on the public, and to demand patronage for its support - lt has a right to complain, also, if it receives but scanty reward for its survices : it has a right to be indignant if the majority in a community are willing to use but not to assist It ; if they who are constantly benefited its existence selfishly abandon it to thi chances of disastrous failure. The assertion that a local newspaper is of positive value the immediate vicinity of its publication, will not be disputed by the very class of people hinted at; yet they will cooly pocket every advantage flowing from it, care...
