Foote, of La Crosse, Wtfconiin, has been sentenced to <jve years hard labor in States pris on for perjury. Foote moved to La Oroase in 1874, from Pittston, Pa., with two women whom he claimed were his sisters, but who were, one (he wife of another, and the other of equally bad character. He worked In varioas printing offices, and com- mitted various thefts, but atoned ibr them by being discharged. He got possession of a job printing of floe, and npon forged letters of rec- ommendation and his pleasant gen tlemaniy address, got into society to an extent. Finally he married MIm Vincent, daughter of respecta- oie parenta, who opposed the match bnt consented to prevent an elope- ment. Santa Anna, with a part of his foroes, was already in San Anto- nio, and had invested the Alamo, while Urrea's brigade was advan- cing on Fannin's post at Goliad. ■ The hostile army now within or en- tering Texas amounted to about 7,500 men, and the Texan forces at the Alamo and Goliad, all that were yet in arms, did not exceed 700 in number. All hope of oo-operation in the interior bad ceased, while the position whiob Texas oooupied as a revolted province in a great meas- ure shut out the bope-of help from abroad. Such was the state of affairs when the convention met.
