HOUSTON TKIDAY VBBRUAKY 5 184 L We have been compelled to use colored paper as we can get no white in the city and that which we have ordered from New Orleans not having arrived. We hope that our friends will rememberthat variety is not only pleasing to the eye bnt according to the poet is the spice of life. We understand that Capt. Sterret is to take com' mand of the steamer Albert Gallatin and our old friend S. B. Eves of the Dayton. Two more able or gentlemanly commanders could not be found. There was a rumor in' town yesterday that a duel had beer fought between D. G-. Burnett and Gen. Sam Houston in which the latter is said to have been wounded; but from a concatenation of circum- cnmstances we are led to believe it to be all a hoax. The steamer Maryland left for Galveston on yes- terday morning. House ha...

Sev- eral of the streams are still very full and the Bra- zos was on the rise when he crossed. The constitution of 1824 has fallen and we' have not yet been able to rebuild it it his disappeared from the face of the earth. That of 1 836 is doomed to fall also ; and even if we had the power we would not will it to be sustained. There appears to be a perfect mania for dogs in this city. There is scarcely a person who has not a puppy or two of first rate breed aud points. The Bank-of the United States resumed yesterday An extra number of clerks were employed and the doors were kept open all day. They were all busy the whole time paying out specie and the stock de- clined two per cent yet there was no doubt but that the Bank was fully able to sustain itself in its re- sumed position! The Coffee Houses about town have adoptrd the cash system so that hereafter there mil be no hquor- iang on tick. This ir awfully bad but it is right. Our city appears lively and busy. The prompt ness and energy with which our city officers act has in a great measure stopped the noting and noise which has heretofore disturbed our streets. The store of Messrs Bacheluer&Baily was en- tered a few evenings since and a suit of clothes and about 820 taken therefrom. Jumping appears te be the order of the day at present. From the highest to the lowest all seem to eniov the exercise. Go it my jumpers frogs and ' toads have done the like before you. Our neighbors of Galveston are doing up Mas- querade Balk in great style. We would like to see things of the kind m tnis city. They talk about contesting the Sheriff's election at Galveston....

Hear how he talks to the sun about helping .him to dispel the 'cimmenarian dark- ' "Where is he gone Oh where Is he gone?' The wise man of former days says there is noth- ing new under the sun However true the maxim is we are certrfn of one fact and that is that it would be something new to see the light of the countenance - of the bonny old day King now at all events. Where Sol has enthroned himself in his solitary grandeur we are unable to say. For the last three or four weeks we have scarcely been visited by even a va- grant beam to vary the monotony of the ''pitiless peltings of the storm." Wonder if the old gentleman has not gone into mourning and confined himself " within doors in consequence of the short suspension of the Herald.
