Tho fact that makes Hunt the best agricultural county in Texas is the richness and wonderful depth of its soil. The county is rolling prairie well drained yet out of its 809 square E. C. SMITH. miles of territory tliero is not a square mile but that is tillable. The soil of the county is about one half black waxy one-fourth black sandy and the remaining fourth light and gray sandy embracing the strips of cross timbers that furnish the county with its abundant supply of wood. There are a number of black land counties in Texas but what makes Hunt county better than tho others is its soil from 2 to 20 feet deep with no rock under it. Consequently it stands drouth better and will last longer than tho soil underlaid with rock. Dallas county for instance has seventy- four persons to the square mile while Castro county has one person to 100 square miles. The acreage in cultivation in 1892 amounted to 9149067 acres or about Ive per cent of the area of the state ex- ceeding the entire area of Rhode Island by 122 square miles. If Texas had the density of population that Illinois has it would have 146o0000 inhabitants; if as densely populated as New York it would have 27750000; as New Jersey 63800000; or as Great Britain and Ireland 85422000 inhabitants.
