We have now a list opened subscribers in our office where we would be pleased to have all our friends come and put their names down. Wc have undertaken the pub- lication of a paper in Corpus Christi at great expense and every little amount contributed in tlie"way of subscription and advertising- will help us along. The advantages of a newspaper to any town are infinite and to one the position of which is so ctntral to all the great trading points on the Rio Grande as is Corpus Christi the benefits arc incalculable. Well convinced in our own mind that in a shoit time the business of Corpus Christi would soon support a paper we unhesitatingly embarked in the enterprise and in presenting this our third number we take occa- sion to solicit the patrona...

FROM THE RIO GRANDE. Mr. S. R. Miller cams in from Rio Grande City on Saturday for goods bringing with him a number of pack mules. From a conversation with Mr. Miller we learn that Mexicans are coming in freely for goods and that there is a scarcity of those articles known as " Mexi- can goods." He says that the idea entertained that the country is flooded with goods is very erroneous. It is true that in Monterey and Saltillo there are large amounts but they are not suited to the trade having been principally brought in whilst our army occupied the country and selected by persons who knew not the leading articles in Mexican trade. The Mexican traders prefer crossing the river for goods even if there be an American on their side with a stock for the general belief that goods are cheaper on this side has talon such a hold en them that it can- not be eradicated. Besides they do not have to pay so high a duty when tl.cy purchase on American soil. Fifteen miles above Rio Grande City at t...

THE NUECES VAfiLEV Is watered from springs of purs water rising in tho mountains and for salubrity of climate rich land and grazing cannot be surpassed. There are no swamps or pools of stagnant water the prairies being high and rolling in the whole extent from the mountains to the bay though sloping somewhat gradually to the blu ft of the river Nueces. The fallowing is an extract from a document pre- pared by a citizen of Nueces county for one of his friends in another part of the country : "In no part of Texas and you know I have been pretty much all over it havo I seen the equal of tho Nueces valley. With the Lapan Indians before any whites settled here I traversed the whole valley and so struck was I with its general beauty its rolling prairies susceptible alike of cultivation and for grazing purposes (for the latter purpose it having no equal I believe under tho sun) that it was with difficulty I could decide on any particular spot. Down to the very bay there is but little waste...

THE SIERRA MADRE EXPEDITION. Our friend of the Galveston News deeming the "Buffalo Hunt" to have exploded says: "The failure of an enterprise of this kind is.always attended with more or less of disgrace to those con- cerned in it while its success imparts honor and an enviable distinction to the fortunate leaders. Wheth- er this allotment of infamy or honor be just or unjust it is nevertheless but right that those w ho can shall ex- tricate themselves from the former and share the lat- ter." The "Buffalo Hunt" may be at an end and the "Ousel Owls" have gone to Sleepy Hollow but it is no indication to us that the cause of the Sierra Madrc " Republic" is thereby thrown so far into the back ground as to be lost to view forever. The failure of the enterprice? what enterpiize and on whoso part the failure ? The people of the northern provinces have made no failure because they have made no attcVnpt nor do we believe their real friends have acted in any business connected with the separa...

THE SIERRA MADRE SCHEME. Some of the papers of the Union and many persons be- lieve that the project of separating the northern provinces from the Mexican federation was conceited by Americans and that the agitationof the subject has been carried on al- most exclusively by persons oh this side of the Rio Crandc. This is a mistake. It is true that one or two papers havo " gone it blind" and some men have acted in the premises very irrationally pretended to know a great deal and havo given out sufficient hints to disturb the unwary ; but still it had a Mexican foundation was begun by Mexicans and persevered in by them until very recently. Some twenty months before we ever heard of the Ousel Owls we were cognizant of an effort on the part of the citi- zens of Tamaulipas to onn that State to the United Stales or in the event of failure to unite with the States on this ride of the mountains and proclaim themselves independent of Mexico.
