The different kinds of cotton which are imported and used in Great Britain have been examined under the microscope by Dr. Ure and by Mr. E. Wilson. To their observations we are indebted for the following measurements: In examining a sample ol cotton, it is usual to take a portion of it between the forefinger and thumb, and laying the portions as they are successfully drawn out back again on and parnllcd to the filaments from which they have been drawn out, and repeating this process several times, small tuftH arc formed, in which the respect- ive lengths of staple may bo observed. The libres of cotton when drawn out from the mass in which they appear entangled, display so many irregular twists as the give them a joined ap- pearance, and, as Mr. E. With the hope that wo may perhaps save one liorao ft oin the unecessary and terrible forture of the turning-iron, we undertake to reply: Burning for the lampas is as good and humane a remedy as is suffocation between two feather-bed patient is bound to die. Both of these barbarous remedies (?) have long been discarded by civilized and intelligent men. We have occasi- onally had cases of this complaint in our stable, and have always attributed it to over-feeding. But in no single case, however bad, within our knowledge and experience, has it resisted a course of bran mashes, continued for a day or two; with the ad- dition, in one or two instances, of a purgative of salts or aloes. Since our last issue, wo have hod a wcok'a later accounts from Liverpool, bringing our advices from that city up to the 1st inst. There bad been a de- cline of from % to #d. in cotton, tho quotations being for Fair Orleans S^d, Orleans Middling 5>¿d. The sales of the week amounted to 49,000 bales, of which «peculators and exporters took 9,000 bales. Fair cotton had declined the most. Tlie market closed steady at the decline. The Plantation .—Cotton picking outflit now to be finished as soon us possible, and tlio balance of the crop packed and sent forward to market, so that the planter and hin hands may have a little leisure before commencing the next year1 labor. Ihe planting of "our great staple" is a drudgory at best; uut it is made more laborious than necessary, by th<j "never ending, still beginning" system of most of our planters. Lot our readers who are so deeply in- terested, begin the reform at once. Corn land of last year, intended for the sume crop next year, should be broken upthoroughly and deeply ; and if stiff, bedded up and exposed to the ameliorating influence of the winters rain and frost. Plow across the furrows of last year, and subsoil if possible. Land cannot be made too deep or rich for corn—it is a gross and exacting feeder. Clear up, also, some good now, fresh land for the coming corn crop....
