Me- chanics get from $2 to $3 50 per day, but work is by no means so sure lor them. As a rule the towns and vil- lages are overstocked with labor, which tends to depress wages and keen a large percentage ot men idle. COST OK LIVING is greater here than in the older states, particularly in towns where j everything has to be purchased, i Meats are very low but rents are higher and most of the articles of consumption are more expensive. Butler has just made another auda- cious attack cm President Hayes, which is believed to be only a fore- taste of what is to follow. It was on the occasion of a dinner given at the residence of N. 1*. Banks, to which Butler was invited. When his time to say something came he roared out, alluding to Hayes— "I have no respect for a man who will dishonor his mother's marriage certificate. Mind, I don't say that I believe Hayes was fairly elected. I really have not examined the facts closely enough to form an opinion." Banks, a simpering supporter of the administration, had not a word to say to this violent assault. It is the general impression that when Congress re-convenes the war upon the chief magistrate of the nation is to be opened by the disaffected re- publicans with four-fold bitterness, and with a vindictiveness more unre- lenting than that waged against Pres- ident Johnson.
