~1 J ***** JtoME, May, 2d—One of ihe most iu- tereating occurrences of last week was the interview of Rev. Dr. Townsend, Canon of Durham, with the Pope. 1 mentioned in a previous letter that the Rev'd Dr.'s object was to endeavor to induce bis holiness to do away with the bickerings, animosities and polemical discords which keep the various de« nominations of Christians separate and at enmity, and by calling a general coun- cil, to establish the basia of an univer- sal creed. It was certainly a bold at- tempt for a Protestant clergyman to con- ceit the Pope himself, but (he doctor was resolved to beard the lion in his den, and on Friday last he went to the en counter in full diess canonicals. After having knelt to kiss the Pope's hand, Dr. Townsend was invited by his holi- ness to take a chair, and an animated conversation commenced in Latin, a fit language for controversy, and one in which the disputants might be presum- ed to be a match for each other.
