COLD WEATHER AND FROSTS. ? 4 CEREAL GROWTH RETARDED. Ranfall for the month was well up to the average in the district, stated Mr. H. D. L. Adams (agricultural in structor for Eyre's Peninsula), In his report for June. The rain had en abled farmers to push on with seed ing under favorable conditions & with brighter prospects than those of the preceaing monms. owing to the dryness of AprH and May, seeding operations were prolonged more than usual with most farmers, but at the end of the month drilling had prac tically been completed. Some of the earlier sown wheat in some districts, had malted, Poor germination in other cases, was due to pickling seed with formalin some time prior to sowing. * The cold weather and severe frosts experienced during the month retarded growth of cereals and grasses, and feed was very backward, with the Result that stock generally were in low condition where hand feeding had not been resorted to.

The people of Port Lincoln are proud of their lifesaving club, which, during its few /years' existence, has made rapid progress, until today it is recognised as one of the most effic ient organisations of its' kind in the State. Among its achievments last season was the winding of the shield presented annually by the Royal Life saving Society of South Australia to the- club securing the highest num ber of points for the year. The shield, and the individual a wards and certificates, were present ed at a ball in the Memorial Hall on Monday evening. There was an ex cellent attendance. The hall was decorated with streamers, which hung from the centre of the ceiling, and ex tended to the cides of the hall. About 50 per cent. o£ the dry. mat ter of plants is carbon (the charcoal we get when plants are Durni wiui a limited supply of air) and is ob tained from the air. by the green coloring matter of plants in the pre sence of sunlight Oxygen and hy drogen, which together form over 40 per cent, of plants, are the constit uents of water, and are largely taken by plants from water.
