THURSDAY'S MEETING TO THE EDITOR [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 7 November 1873

THURSDAY'S MEETING TO THE EDITOR SIR,—Having been informed this morning that at a public meeting held last night at Mr. Skelton's store my name was made use of as having made an outrageous statement regarding mine swindling in this Territory, and not wish- ing the public to be misled, I must emphatically repudiate the statement in toto. I am, Sir,   W. C. PAUL, Manager Amalgamated Co. Palmerston, Oct 7, 1873.

TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 7 November 1873

TO THE EDITOR. SIR,—Being present, part of the time, at the public meeting, held this evening outside of Mr. Skelton's store, I was surprised to find the principal speakers were men who had never been out of Port Darwin, and that their im- pressions were that there was nothing to induce them to stay in this part of the colony : that there was no payable gold in the country, and that no reefs had been opened out yet. And there was also a resolution carried recommend- ing the Government to cause work to be com- menced by the 1st December. I may state that I saw a man to-day, viz., Mr. Thomas Radford, and he mentioned that a man named Samuel Slater, with some other assistance, had got about £80 worth of gold during three or four weeks, near Sandy Creek. I saw a stone to-day from the Fountain Head reef, at   Edwards', and this was as fine a stone as any one could wish to see ; and the holders of that ground are almost certain of the durability of the reef ; and its richness...

LAW COURTS. LOCAL COURT Wednesday, November 5. (Before Dr. Millner, S.M., Dr. Ellison, S.M, Mr. Conner, J.P., and Mr. Gardiner. J.P.) GRAHAME V. LITTLE Adjourned case. The plaintiff, for whom Mr. Smith appeared, claimed £76 2s. for work done on the telegraph line. He stated that he left the line some hundred miles inland, after giving one of the officers a month's notice, his object being to obtain some boots and clothing which he could not get at the depots. But when he reached Port Darwin, Mr. Little refused to pay him his wages on the ground that he had de- serted the service. Mr. Little, who was cross-examined at con- siderable length by Mr. Smith, produced an agreement by which defendant was bound to re- main in the service until he was no longer re- quired ; and said that to the best of his belief and knowledge there were plenty of boots and clothes on the line. The defendant had no authority whatever to leave the service. Still, he did not dispute that wages were due to Augus...

Northern Territory Times. PALMERSTON: FRIDAY, NOV. 7, 1873. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 7 November 1873

Northern Territory Times PALMERSTON : FRIDAY, NOV. 7, 1873. The "Northern Territory Times,"   which is the first newspaper ever pub- lished on this side of the Australian continent, makes its appearance to-day, though not in the complete form and size which it will assume next week. But we have thought it wiser to issue two pages in time for the mail, which is now leaving, than to wait for four pages, and so lose the opportunity of sending the earliest possible news to the other colonies. Even as it is, the difficulty of getting out a paper in this remote settle- ment, without plenty of time to do it in, has been very great. We have had only five clear days in which to land our machinery, type, &c., and to get everything ready for the issue of this first paper, and that, too, during the hottest period in the year of a tropical climate. All sorts of little obstructions and difficulties have had to be met, and if it had not been for our good luck in obtaining the ...

THE MINING REGULATIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 7 November 1873

THE MINING REGULATIONS. On Thursday evening an out-door meeting, called by Mr. J. Skelton, was held in Palmer- ston, for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the Mining Regulations. Mr. Bieber was appointed Chairman. Mr. Skelton, in a few remarks, moved the first resolution, as follows : " That this meeting is of opinion that the main cause of the departure of new arrivals is attributable to the absurd and unjust regula- tions now in force on the reefs, viz., allowing large blocks of land to be monopolized by those who follow like vampires in the wake of the original prospectors." On the resolution being seconded by Mr. Rosenswig, an amendment was proposed by Mr. Donald Munro, to the effect— " That the cause of himself and others going away was not the granting of large blocks of land to promoters ; but the absence of gold to any payable extent in the Northern Territory." He said that it was not a gold country. There were no well-defined reefs ; and the hills were all ironstone. ...

THE LATE PERJURY CASE. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 14 November 1873

THE LATE PERJURY CASE TO THE EDITOR. Sir-Hearing that the Northern Territory Justice Bill has been thrown out, I wish to make a few remarks with reference to the ad- ministration of justice in the Northern Terri- tory. In March or April of this year Mr. Dillon Cox was prosecuted for perjury, and was fully committed for trial to Adelaide, at the sessions held on the lrst August, 1873. Witnesses were not immediately bound over to appear, but were given to.understand that they would be required'tö go to Adelaide per first vessel In the meantime the Flying Cloud arrived, bring- ing the .Commissioner from Batavia via Timor, and shortly after the Gothenburg arrived. The witnesses were then bound over in a £200 penalty to appear in Adelaide on the 1st of August The Hon. T. Reynolds was at this time on his tour to the reefs, and on his return he changed the venu of .the trial back from Adelaide to Palmerston, which interference with the course of justice I have reason to be live was illegal...

otfR ADELAIDE TELEGRAM TO THE EDITOR. Sny-t-Seeing a -telegram from Adelaide m your columns yesterday, in which reference was made to an arbitration case in Equity Reynolds v. Gore,-I beg to state that the said case of ¡mine against Alfred Gore, senior, is not settled yet, that I am aware of. Moreover. I beg to enter my public protest against tele- grams respecting private firms being published, 1 am well aware from whom the telegram em- anated, being instigated by one of your own directors-Mr. William Whyte-against whom I have a* case for depriving me of a large num- ber of promoters shares in the Priscilla and Winn's Companies, in which Mr. Alfred Gore, senior, is mixed up. I am extremely sorry that your first issue, should have been made the means of communication, evidently with a view to injure me in the Northern Territory.
