LONDON ABLAZE WORST RAID ON CAPITAL St. Paul's Cathedral Damaged LONDON^/ On Sunday night large ^JKs of London were converted intoa, . blazing inferno as successive v/aves . of German ? bombers, operating immediately after dark, lit a brilliant trail across the capital. It was the worst raid yet carried out on ? the capital. There was a1 nailte monium of noise with the slavish ' of bombs, the crackle of incen diary bombs as they ignited buildings, and the deafening thud of high explosive bombs. The blackout became superflu ous. Fires * illuminated the streets and newspapers could be read in the glare. Incendiary bombs burned through. the lead roofing of St. Paul's Cathedral. From the- top of a building in a bus)' area 17 fires were visible within ? , a quarter of a mile radius, including a ' famous Wren church, a club and: many business .premises. Members of the A.F.S. were hopelessly engaged in try x ing to save the church which resembled a furnace as the flames took their merciles...
