OUR FIRE-BELL. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 20 August 1898

OUR FIRE-BELL.. Now that the summer months are approaching, bringing in their train, as they generally do, an increase, of fires in our midst, the question natur ally arises; "Is it not time the town ship was supplied with a NEW FIRE BELL in lieu of the one now doing service locally ~" We have been in. formed that the bell now used is of such small dimensions, and has such little volume of tone, that it is abso lutely impossible to distinguish its sound from that of an ordinary bul lock bell. This is rather a harsh state-' ment, but who is there amongst us that will not-admit there is truth in the allegation. As proof of this, we have only to cite instances of where fires having taken place, and when the bell was rung, it could not be heard the length of the street; this also in the evening, when people are mostly about. 'It would, then, be ridiculous to expect that anyone would hear it during the night hours, when all were hushed .in 'the arms, of. Morpheus. There can' be no 'doubt...

A Veritable Frankenstein. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 20 August 1898

Tnzss words, spoken by Mr. Ander son, Shire Eagineer, at the last meet ing of the Council, in reporting on the state of the Woods Point Road, should impress everyone of the absolute neces sity that exists for a more fcrward and determined course of procedure in the near future from our local legislators. We are now on the eve of an election, and candidates who will pledge_ t heselyes .whollyy and solely in favorof" immediate. action towards placing the road mentioned in a sound and trafficable condition should re ceive some consideration. We have repeatedly dwelt upon the importance of this work, we have shown from authority how the money might be raised, and at what interest, and what actual benefit would result. We know well that the road in question HAS re ceived attention in the past, and has had a fair amount of money spent upon its improvement, but nothing near the amount absolutely required, and what is the result 4 Nearly every week we have instances of the condi tion of the...

Influenza, a complaint now affecting a large portion of the population of Sydney, is one of the most enervating and troublesome: diseases known. A sufferer from this trouble, Mr. A. S.
