The S.A.J.C- wound up the Cnrlslmas Carnival with their meeting at Morphettvillc on Saturday. Their two-days meeting was successful, although the attendances were not up to the usual standard. REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT. [Newspaper Article] — The Port Adelaide Gazette — 10 January 1930

REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT. ! The Irish merchant, W. Barnelt, second in the list of winning owners in England, may be said to have had a remarkable season. He raced but 1-wo horses. He bred them both. Be tween them they won two races. And the six races made one of - them the greatest stake-winner of the year among horses, and placed his owner second oniy to Aga Khan as the* most successful owner of the season. Many other ov/ners and trainers raced from twenty to forty horses during the year, and won far less than Bar nett did with the two of his own breeding — Trigo and Athford. ] What accentuates the remarkable 1 character of the achievement is that Trigo and Athford are full brothers. They have proved a tremendous advertisement for the Swynford horse Blandford. There are still people in England who contend that these two are not really horses of the best class, and that Blandford- will not rire genuine stayers. But, as Josh Billings was wont to remark, 'It ain't no use to argue agains...

UNDER THE EUGENIC RULE. [Newspaper Article] — The Port Adelaide Gazette — 10 January 1930

UNDEK THE EUGENIC RULE. ? i ' [ The Eugenic Research Association, backed by the Carnegie Institution, -as been conducting a research into *he thoroughbred horses at Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. The savants have scudied foiood strains and breed ing, have delved into the family tree of hundieds of horses, and have charted the. performances of them ^nd tneir offspring. Such factors as weight, age, iand speed have been charted, and a formula worked out, it is claimed, by which all horses may be judged. j The scientists at Cold Spring Har-; bor have found that Man-o'-War was1 the greatest American racehorse of( all time. Also that mares reach their : mnnacle ?t two and a half yeais, a horse at three and a half, geldings at five and a half. ! The present system of handicap-' ping by weight is all wrong, they declare. The average racehorse, tney maintain, runs better with 110 lb. on its back than 90 lb. ; to decrease the weight is to decrease the speed. Some horses are best at as high a weight...
