Advertising [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 3 January 1891

Catcht Advertising.— Advertising in these days has boen reduced almost to a science. Yet while people read the daily papers, arid glance in ft wore or lees cur sory manner at the advertisements. few have any idea of the thought and trouble required to get up a good 'catchy' advertisement, and tho man who can do so can always commands a good salary. Take the patent inedicino men, for in stance, for they are the ones who mostly . use this style of advertising. One hoUBe pays its man a salary represented by five figures, though for this he takes charge of the entire advertising of the firm, rocks, lithographing, papers, 4c. His general instructions are to this effect : 'Go ahead and advertise, but don't bother tlie firm.' And who shall say that these men do not do their work well? Who has not started a most enter taining anecdote in hiB paper, and when just reaching the climax found Brown's Balsam, Smith's Salve, Robinson's Relief, or someone else's cure all, in the vulgar language, ' ...

"A Complete Breakdown" TO THE EDITOR OF THE SHOALHAVEN NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 3 January 1891

'A Complete Breakdown-' TO THE EDITOR Of THE SBXtALHAVKit NEWS. Sir, — I ask just a sipall space for a few remarks with regard to a para graph which appeared in your Nowra contemporary .- on ,- W-ednesday last, headed as above, and. having reference to a cabe of assault and robbery pre ferred against several young men, residents of Nowra. I seldom take up my poa for nowspaper writing, but I think that where a Government officer is attacked, and' that without any real necessity, some one should come out and defend him, more particularly as the party attacked has not thepower to defend himself. By the paragrapli above stated, the general public would be led to believe that the collapse, of the case was caused by some mismanagement on the part of Sergeant Sykes, whilst a plain state ment of the facts would dispel all doubt in the mutter. Anyone who listened to tho case, tried very atten tively, must have seen there was no fault on the part or the police. Ser geant Sykes had a bad case,...
