RIFLE SHOOTING. Ah interesting match waa shot off on Saturday, On the new range at Browlcy, between representa tive teams of tho Moss Yale and Burrawang R. . R. Corps, and resulted in a victory for Moss Vale team by 71 points. There ivcro nine men a-siilc, and the Moss Valeltcs shot exceptionally well, putting lip an nggrcgato total of 492, or an 'individual average of 54H each. Lambert again specially distinguished himself with the splendid score of 05, making the possible at tho 500yds. rango. In fact it is held by some that his score, if correctly nnrked, would have been within three of the possible. H. Richardson was, to use a vulgar ism, also on the ' job,' for ho totted up the very respectable score of 61 points. The Moss Vale riflemen arc, to bo congratulated ou the improve ment in their shooting, and taking the averages litely made as a guide, there aro few teams in the colony that can measure Martinis with them. CLEVER SWINDLERS. BELL AND DAVIS, With regard to the defaulters, Bell and Davis, a San Frauciseo paper says : — Advices received from Honolulu suite that it has become known since tho Beagle left that about 24,000dol. in sovereigns was placed in the hands of a man named Leonard who came from Hilo with Bloom and Douglass, for the pupoae of keeping the money out of the authorities, and also for the purpose of changing them into American gold. This Leonard succeeded in doing, and left for San Francisco on the steamer Mariposa, which sailed from here on the 20th instant. The aatne ateamcr carried the wives of Bell and Davis, who came up from tho colonics and who proceeded on to San Francisco, accompanied by Leonard and a young man named Byrne, a nephew of Davis Tho mother and sister of Davis who tried to inter cept the refugees here to recover £6000 from them are still in Honolulu. A SMART BOY. There is a story going the rounds about a man whp has become a successful merchant.1' A few years ago he wus employed as amoffice boy and messenger for a large firm. He was sent to collect an account from a firm which was considered vory ' slinky,' and was told to get the money atfSll hazards. The debtors gave the lad a- cheque for £50. He went to the bank at once to cash it, and was told by the cashier that there were not enongh funds to meet it. ' How much short !' asked the lad. ' Thirty shillings.' was tho answer. It lacked but a minute or two of the lime for the bank to close. The hoy felt in his pockets, took out thirty shillings, aud, push ing it through the window, said, ' ' ut that to the credit of Blank and Co.' The cashier did so, whereupon the boy presented the cheque nnd got the money. Blank nnd Co. failed tho next duy, and hair chagrin can be better imagined than de scribed when they found out the trick tint lmd been played upon them.

He did not see tho necessity for doing so at first, but ultimately went on to say that it was only another instance of the ill-luck which at times will befall a man. *1 never anticipated,' says Giffcn, 1 that I would havo been got out so cheaply in the sec ind innings ; but I had scarcely time to set mv eve in before Attewell sent me a trimmer.
