[ADVERTISEMENT:] BEFORE the Governor, Clergy of all denominations, Officials, Merchants and feeling Public-T. B. SHERRATT, again lays claim to sympathy, and not only sympa- thy, but assistance upon good security. He has passed four years in endeavoring to bring the wicked to reason, but of no avail; near one of those years   has been passed in Perth, at times in much misery. He has again appealed to the Bank, the reply is 'the Bank decline, as it does not wish to enter into such business;" now! the business is-honour for the law, and humanity towards an old settler de- prived of all moveable property by a known rogue; the security offered for a Loan of £500 is 13 allot- ments in Albany, with buildings on three, house, store, &c. &. T. B. S. has children he wishes to put in, business on 1st January-he has no funds until the law case is settled, or means to carry that to issue; his witnesses are 300 miles off, at least twelve of them. No title [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 1 January 1848

THE most important matter of discussion   at the present hour, and to which we would draw the earnest and lively attention of   our readers, is the great scarcity of labor for Agricultural as well as pastoral pur- poses; and, without needlessly wasting time and breath upon the cause thereof, let us unite in searching out some sure remedy. Until the intentions of the British Parliament, regarding Emigration are more clearly defined than even the last reports made them to appear, and the claims of this particular colony acknowledged in a just and equitable manner, the remedy must remain in the hands of the settlers. The settlers must, at least, for a period, furnish the means of procuring labor, to the extent of their resources and actual wants. If necessary, they must make some sacri- fice to obtain that without which their occupation is worse than unprofitable; and we see no prospect of amelioration with the present number of hands, a number more likely to ...

"THE BEST OF HUSBANDS." [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 1 January 1848

"THE BEST OF HUSBANDS." THIS is a very rare animal, but he is to be found. The existence of the unicorn has been successfully disputed ; and that very handsome and graceful animal, instead of being harnessed to Her Majesty's state carriage-as assuredly the species should be, could eight of them be procured-is merely employed upon heraldic duty, namely to support Her Majesty's arms. But that good husband-let all our virgin readers-take heart-is not fabulous. We cannot,, certainly percisely mark out his habitat. We do not think, the creature is to be found at public masquerades, or billiard-rooms, or in soiled boots, dancing the Polka at the Casino de Venus, de Bacchus, or any other casino of any other disreputable heathen deity. The habits, too, of the Best of Husbands vary, with the best of wives. Some are best for one , particular virtue-some, for another-and some for virtue too numerous to specify. Some Best of Husbands are always buying best of wives new gowns; some best, again a...

CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 1 January 1848

CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS. CHRISTMAS week is a period of rejoicing mostly all over the world, and is not less remarkable as a week of festivity in this small and isolated portion of Her Majesty s possessions. In spite of the pau- city of public amusements afforded in a young co- lony, relaxation in a variety of forms has been in- dulged in by. young and old. Roast beef and plum pudding, mince pies, custards, and whip-sillibubs, with a goodly array of foreign and colonial wines, and fruits, have fallen to the portion of the better class, and the modicum of Her Majesty's coinage in the colony, has no doubt found a quickened cir- culation in the form of presents, and. the usual douceur of the season.. If every colonist, blessed with the good things of this world, has not done all that may be expected of him to smooth the ragged path of his less fortunate fellows, we sin- cerely believe that there has been, in each house, at least, an endeavour to do something towards the commemoration of the ...

COLONIAL ARRIVALS. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 1 January 1848

COLONIAL ARRIVALS. The Arpenteur arrived on Monday last. The average net price realised on the cattle was not more than £5 a head; Mr Leake's thorough-bred horse sold for £40; of the goats only 40 were landed out of 125. The Vixen's stock averaged £18 10s, she was chartered for the Seychelles. A private letter says :—"Horses must be smal- ler than those usually sent, in fact, they should be short punchy well-made cobs." By the arrival during the week of the schooners Wave and Lightning from Adelaide, we have re- ceived intelligence from New South Wales down, to the 12th of November; Van Dieman's Land November 24; and South Australia 9th December. The news from England is about a week later than that received by the Dispatch; the general elections were absorbing the public mind. Lord J. Russell, J. Pattison, Baron L. Rothschild, and J. Masterman were elected for the City of London. W. G. Craig and Charles Cowan for Edinburgh; H. R. Yorke and J. G.Smyth for York; Sir T. Birch, and E.....

[Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 1 January 1848

The Editor of this Journal invites the free expres- sion of the opinions of his Correspondents, but will not be held responsible for them. The name and address of the writer must accompany each com- munication. To the Editor of the "Independent Journal" Sir,- Pardon my troubling you with a subject which, until redressed, will ever be a matter of disgrace to our Government and the colony; I mean the shameful wrong committed against the legitimate importer, by the cool and successful me- thod in which government officers carry on their trading operations; wholesale, retail, and for ex- portation. Nothing is more common than for these worthies to inveigh bitterly against what they are pleased to call "the exorbitant charges of storekeepers;" and a stranger, visiting the place, would naturally be- lieve them, from such reprepresentations, the greatest rascals under the sun. But, I would just ask any of these declaimers, if they could in plain common sense believe (granting that they hav...

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. " Vox populi, vox Dei." SATURDAY, JANUARY 1, 1847. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 1 January 1848

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. " Vox populi, vox Dei" SATURDAY, JANUARY 1, 1847. If a person materially varies his usual style of dress he expects his friends and acquaintances, will remark the change, and accordingly resolves, to undergo the fiery ordeal of their criticism, which may be more or less severe in proportion to the taste he displays. Neither is he regardless of public opinion, but studiously adjusts his attire, so as to be in unison with the fashion of the day. Thus it is with our- selves ; we this day assume an entirely new aspect, and deck our columns with such a variety of type, as, we trust, may prove more pleasing to the eye than the sameness of our discarded letter. To effect this object, no expence or trouble has been spared; it has been our wish to merit the approval and support of our Subscribers, as well as the patronage of the Public, to whose judgement we shall, as in duty bound cheerfully submit.     But it is not alone to the external ap...
