"The Revival of English Agriculture" [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 6 April 1900

' The of Enggish AV Agriculture,' The writer of the above interesting book, in his introductory chapter, puts forth proofs that agriculture in England has had a revival. He says : ' The farmer is still in the act of adjusting him self to new codnitions. To a large ex tent he has laid aside the . traditional methods, and not onoe, for a hundred times ? before, do you hear him vowing that a certain way must be right because 'me and my vader afore me, and his vader afore him,' followed it. He realises that he has to serve his day and gen er ation— not cater for the wants of a bygone time. It it no longer exceptional to meet an agriculturist so broad minded as to admit that low prices, cheap transit, and foreign competition are no curses, no bugbears, but blessings unspeakable to the country at large. England never betore was so busy, happy, and prospe rous as at this moment. Cheap food and ?clothing have added immeasurably to the milUons who earn their bread by the ?sweat of their brow...

Wait! [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 6 April 1900

Wait I « The darkest hour is that before the dawn.*' We talk about the awful war, We criticise the news ; We rate about our losses, Or else we get lt the blues.' We talk and think or nothing else Khaki is round us flaunted ; We haven't been there, yet we know Exactly what is wanted ! We set upon the War Office — ' Bed tape ' we loudly scorn ; The Intelligence Department Don't know thatthey are born. It's, tiki/s man's fault, its that man's fault ; And yet, what can we do? j We say, ' If only I was there, | ' In Bob's or Buller's shoe.' I We sit before the fireside, And read the list with dread, Lest the. name of one we. cherish Be found amongst the dead. And if at length we find it We bow 'neath sorrow's sway, And all the glad ' to-morrow ' Is burried in ' to-day.' The triumph of each victory We herald forth with glee ; The patriotic spirit swells, And spreads o'er land and sea ! But when with sad reverses Our hearts are sorely tried, We Cannot wait with patience The ' turning of th...

Vengeance. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 6 April 1900

Vengeance. ' If you do not wire me by to-night that you have left ? — 's place, , I leave for Sydney to-morrow.' Such was the purport of a telegram j handed to the operator of a telegraph office in a small country town over two hundred. miles from Sydney. The sender left the office with a quick, firm tread, and, leaying the street, turned his steps towards a narrow track which led to the two bare hills which, from thev back of the office, overlooked the town. He was evidently a stranger to the | place, and as he walked up the path ..his tall, handsome figure and general bear ing indicated determination and power. His well-developed head, his quick, pene trating ? eye and expressive features, were indices of a strong and active in tellect. As he slackened his pace and began- to look about, a keen observer could detect a restless, anxious look in the eye, and an expression of deep con cern about the features which convinced him that the stranger was the victim of some great trouble. H...

RE WEIRS ON THE BELUBULA. (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 6 April 1900

RE WEIRS ON THE BELUBULA. (To the Editor.) Sre, — Having noticed a letter m your issue of the 23rd ult. from Mr. F. C. Crowe, and in a Molong paper one from Mr. James Brown re the proposal to erect weirs on the Belubula River. Being one of the first to take action in this matter, I would like to explain how the thing really stands. Some time ago I mentioned the. subject of erecting a weir to Mr, J. M« Atkinson ; he in turn, as an opportunity offered, discussed the subject with one of the officials, who advised our approacliing the Minister by. way of petition. This was done, and the peti tion was signed by all the landowners on the north side of the River from North Bangaroo almost to Canowindra, asking the Minister to send an expert up to see if, in his opinion, it was practicable and advisable to erect a weir on the Belubula about two miles from its junction with the Lachlan and another near Canowin j dra, and the probable cost of same. Acting ! on this petition, the Minister sent...

Correspondence. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 6 April 1900

Correspojidanca. JPe do not hold ourselves responsible for views expressed by our correspondents. —Ed.] To the Editor. THE BLUE JACKET MINE. SlR, — Your issue of the 30th inst., contains a paragraph anezit the above mine that calls for some explanation at your hands. The use of the word l- illused ' in reference to the property may by some, be coustrued to reflect upon the capability of the present management, and as, during the last two years and a half, I have had con trol of the work at the mine, I have to ask you to more clearly define your meaning. The present management, as represented by the Company's Sydney Attorney and myself, regret quite as much as any one else that there has been such a long period of enforced idleness, but it is, unfortunately, not in their power to prevent it. The business people of Canowindra have, I admit, an indirect interest in the welfare of the mine, but they have not spent out of their own pockets the large sums of money for purchase and develop...

Household Hints. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 6 April 1900

^H^sehcld Hints. ^^^^^Care for an Umbrella. — Tn 3sWj^ffgan umbrella you must take it oa - faith, for the most experienced shopp-r cannot tell how it will wear. Silk of a smooth taffeta weave is a good purcha-o and light t') carry. Gloria makes a heavier umbrella, hut it out-wears any silk make. No matter what the material ma}7 be, however, never keep it strapped, except when it is carried. Keeping it tightly rolled up destroy half of its durable qualities. When wet, dry an umbrella by standing it with handle down so as to prevent rusting the framework, ' as happens when the water runs off', the other end and collects at the top. 'When nearly dry do not open the um brella or it will-stretch out of shape while drying. Wipe the. handle when ready to putaway, ufcing a piece chamois if there is any silver about it. Sometimes a blue or green umbrella spots when lightly wet ; in such a case open it and set out in the first hard ram, the spots disappear ing when it is thoroughly dampened. ...
