Water Supply. If any resident of the town had gone away on a trip and were to return at the present time, he would not know old Smithfield — at any rate in regard to the' water supply. Only a few months back many of the residents were put to considerable trouble and inconvenience m drawing from the canal, that is half way to Parramatta 1 but now, although the weather hal been a lot drier, affairs are greatlJ altered. For we find that some of oul intelligent and energetic aldermen havl been at work. It may justly be termel ' work.' When they saw what ( scanty supply we had, and that then Vjis a great likelihood of getting t|b vj-ter Board to lay mains, thty moved in the matter of having the tow reticulated and connected with th| supply canal. Forthwith they weim met with strong opposition. TheJI then got up a petition, and took step* to have mains laid. Their opponents! resorted to a counter petition. Sickness. We always seem to bo troubled with some complaint or other, the most pre valent now being influenza and bron chitis. Though in most cases in a slight form, yet a few of our old and respected residents are in a very low and critical condition, and a few deaths of infants have occurred.
