AMERICA. THE NEW GOLD FIELDS [Newspaper Article] — Wagga Wagga Express and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 30 October 1858

AMERICA.. TIIH NEW GOLD FIELDS The gold discoveries oil Fraser's River continues everywhere to be great subjects of interest. Every mail from California brings accounts of fresh discoveries of gold,.more proofs of the richness of the neWifields. The immense number of Californians who have left San Francisco forthe British territory is sufficient proof that the statements are not exaggerated,. cor respondents of the American journals having had time to visit-the mines and send back reports. The effect of these discoveries on British interests in America can hardly be exaggerated. A wealthy and populous British colony will at once be established on the shores of the Pacific, possessing the greatest advantage which any country can enjoy in its inexhaustible supplies of coal. Ever since California became a place of importance, the Americans have been endeavouring to discover a better means of communicating with it than is afforded by the Isthmus of Panamli, and have surveyed no less tha...

COLONIZATION. [Newspaper Article] — Wagga Wagga Express and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 30 October 1858

COLONIZATION. [From the Times, Julzty 26.] The establishment of a new colony. is something like the birth of a child. Everybody makes it the subject of eongratulation, though nobody can tell whether it ought not to be treated as a matter of condolence. Cast the horoscope of the new-born infant, set the probabilities of disease against those of health, the chances of disgrace, and misforthne against those of honour and prosperity, and who shall say that it is a good thing that that child was born into the world; and, still more, who shall say that it is an auspicious event for its parents? The anxiety and expense are certain and immediate; the reward and gratification remote and problematical. -This domestic illustration seems to us most especially applicable to the nascent colony of NEw Caledonia. W'ith what a flourish of trumpets has it been ushered into existence; what tropes and figures have been expended on the auspicious event ' One would really suppose that the nation had rece...

SThe necessity of assizes being held at a place neaier to this part of the colony than Gonlburn, has long been talked about; and things have at last come to such a pass, that we shall now no longer allow ourselves to be so shamefully treated as to be obliged to go 430 miles to prosecute a horse stealer or other criminal, just to please the Government in Sydney. We . have long requested that D)eniliquin ,r some other convenient place might be appointed an assize town, but the managers of the colony are deaf to our demands; nor will they probably think...
