STRONG ENGLISH WORDS. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 9 June 1897

STRONG ENGLISH WORDS. .When a person says " I suffered ex- cruciating pain," he expresses a fact in the strongest : words afforded by the English language. The word " excrucia- ting " comes from " crux ", a cross, and! KiguiKes au intensity of agony comparable only to that endured by ono who under- goes the barbarous punishment of cruci- fixion. There are some diseases which, for a time, cause pain of this acute mid formidable nature. To lind a relief, for it, when possible, is at once thu impulse of humanity, and thc studious desire of science. .Two brief examples may indi- cate what success is attending the effort to both comfort and cure cases of this kind. '? ' ? " ' '. '?? " Nearly all my life," writes au intelli- gent woman, "I have borne the burden of what appeared tobe an incurable ill- ness. I ¡.¡ways felt heavy, weary, and .tired. My ' appetite was poor, and af ter eating I bad a "cruel: pain" at my chest and between the shoulders. Frequently : the pain was so intense that...

Cairns Rifle Club. MATCH WITH CHARTERS TOWERS. THE LOCAL MEN WIN BY EIGHT POINTS. SOME TALL SCORING. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 9 June 1897

Cairns Rifle Club. MATCH WITH CHARTERS TOWERS. THE LOCAL MEN WIN BY EIGHT POINTS. SOME TALL SCORING.   On Saturday afternoon last a match was   shot between a team of the Cairns Rifle Club and one from the Charters Towers Rifle Club. The day was favourable for shooting with a strong, but steady Southerly wind, and the scores show that the members of the team were in first-class form. The average of 84.1 per man, recorded for the day, is by far the highest ever put up by any local team in a match, and proves beyond all   doubt the advancement which has been made during the present year. Mr Geo. Bardon's score of 92, compiled of very even individual scores, is the record for Cairns in any match and shows what steady practice will do. We heartily congratulate Mr Bardon upon his excellent score and trust that he will see his way clear to form one of the team to visit Charters Towers in con- nection with the North Queensland Rifle Association meetin...
