Protection! THERE is no mistaking the fact that in the eyes of some of the world's public men, there is something peculiarly fascinating in the doctrine of protection. We might go further tbua this, and say. that there is sometbiug in it which, once imbibed, makes men almost aarage, unrelenting, aud unforgiving. It waa under the regime nnd almost in tbe name; ot JVotectton, tliat many'of the great wars recorded, in history were waged, the American war of independence, the war with China, and others— aud that * tbe hereditary hatred Of one people towanle another -has been cherished from generation to generation.
