BENEFIT SOCIAL At Gerringong There was an excellent attendance in the Gerringong School of Arts re cently when the local R.S.S.A.I.L.A. Branch conducted a social evening as a benoit for Digger Len Shaw and his family. Dancing, gaines anld colpetitions held the interest of patrons through out the evening whilst others en joyed a euchre tournament. The recently formed local orchestra pro vid( d the music during the evening and their efforts were greatly apprec iated. During the evening Mesdamnes D. G. Campbell and C. M. Miller sang a duet whilst Mr. Cyril Sharpe ren dered a solo. A delightful. supper was served after which the Diggers' President (Mr. H-. N. Miller) thanked all those who had co-operated to make the :unction for such a worthy cause a success.

Reason: The N.R.M.A. is planning to equip its service vehicles with two-way radio equipment. OBITUARY MR.- SAMUEL E. GILBY-68 YRS. His many friends in this district will regret to learn of the death on Friday last at the General Hospital, Gyminpie, Queensland, of Mr. Samuel Edward Gilby at the age of 6S years. He will be well remember d as Headmaster of Jerrara Public Schoot and as a keen cricketer and sports man, having played for both Kiama and Jamberoo teams. Before coming ,to this district be was stationed at Heathuote and was first Headmaster of Bombo School and then was stationed at Jerrara for 20 years. He was later at Win dellema and at Mulyandry, via Forbes, from which school he re tired after I48 years in the employ of the Education Department. Some ti'o months ago he went to Gympie for a holiday and taking ill was admitted to the General Hospit al where he passed away. Whilst at Jerrara he was an Elder of the Kianma Presbyterian Church and was secretary of the Church Committee and a. member of the choir. His wife predeceased him in 1928 and he is survived by two ...

"ROUNDABOUT" BY "THE MAN IN THE STREET" History Section-I've often won dered just how' Rangoon Island came to be'where it is. Well t found out during the week. It ap Dears that years ago there were six islands and not five where the pres eat group is located off Wollongong. One day a fellow front Kiama (Synm rnds I think was his name) went fish ing on one of them and- after sever al casts his bait was taken by some thing pretty big. Not being able to hold the monster, he raced several times round the Island thus securely hitching his line. However whatever was on the other end of the line was not to be stopped and off it went with the Island in tow. Opposite the mouth of the Minnamurra River the line broke and so the Island settled down again in that area and later became known as Rangoon Island.
